Norton Commando Fastback LR

Is this a full kit, or did you make the base and spacers?
I made the base and spacers, the base mount is a piece of 4mm alloy and it is attached to the RGM threaded inserts in their base.

As far as I can tell Dynodave's investigation was focused on 850 frames.
I'm presuming my '72 frames are UK, not Italian built?

Yes I was just pointing out that the narrow frames appeared to continue on into 850 so how can it be due to the change in mudguard section or Italian frames.

The issue I found is the '72 frame rear loop has a larger radius rear bend - I'm guessing to accommodate the wider 'D' section rear mudguard, since earlier frames used a narrower 'C' section. They both measure 255mm at the midway bend, but the '70 curves in more from the mid-point back.

'70 vs '72 frame loop comparison

The effect is the '72 frame fouls the early FB tail moulding - it's not 100% clear in the photo due to the rear tyre, but best endeavours etc...

Which goes back to my clearly contentious question - was there a late model-specific FB tail moulding - I'm guessing the one listed in the '71 & 72 parts book must be wider?
If so, presumably it would be OK on later frames...

Just my experience, but I have (or had) several tail sections and a variety of frames, '68-'70 and '71-'75 (but never a '72). I have never had an issue fitting either and early (badge type) or late (non-badge) tail to an early or late frame. Maybe I was lucky, but having read Dyno Dave's discourse on frames, I purposely tested them on frames for fit. Granted some may have been aftermarket. Maybe it is Renolds vs. Italian frame?

Maybe it is Renolds vs. Italian frame?

But then as far as I'm aware the Verlicci frames were not introduced until 1973 so all frames up to that time including 1972 should have been made by Reynolds (not Renold they make chains).

Anyone want to build a fastback? I have a complete kit that I will probably never use. It is all in good serviceable condition.
PM me if anyone needs this. I can get some photos

Just out of curiosity,is this Interpol tank steel?
Yes, Atlas top and a series of flat plates butt welded to make a Commando type base. Very labour intensive and if not done properly prone to leaks. Homers who made them had good welders so not leaks on any of my 3 Interpol tanks.
