How on earth could he be challenged for stamping it??

How is that conversation going to go:

“I think you‘ve stamped that”
”why”?
”they‘re kinda wonky”
”yeah, they‘re all like that...”

I can’t see how anyone could have any evidence or basis to argue at all !

A ground off and re stamped or otherwise tampered with number is a VERY different matter, very easy to spot.

But a number stamped onto virgin cases? That’s how they left the factory ...

Anyway, it’s the proper process. When you buy new cases they come unstamped because you’re supposed to use the old number after scrapping the old cases.

Same process with frames.

If you think about it, it’s logical. If you bought legit new unstamped cases, then later on bought a legit new unstamped frame, you’d have a bike with no identity unless you kept and used the old numbers.

If you buy or are supplied with new cases by a dealer and they stamp and supply the all important receipt then there will be noproblem. If you stamp your own cases and have no receipt ,either for the cases or the stamping ,then best make sure you do it right . Confidence is everything in these matters. The DMV officials are unlikely to be knowledgable about classic 50year Commandos , but they will have a pretty good idea if someone is trying it on or not.

I don’t see anyone trying anything on really, new cases stamped as they should be. Expecting receipts for parts on a 50 yr old motorcycle would be a tall order me thinks!

Anyway, I’m not trying to persuade the op to stamp these, I said many posts ago that IMHO ‘to stamp or not’ should be guided by the requirements of the local authority.

But... my point in these later posts is that stamping them is not wrong.

Intertesting post. Here in California, they record the VIN/Frame and they have a special Line for 'Motorcycle Engine Number.'
On non Moto's, this line is blank. If it is an instate transfer, nobody looks at anything, just paperwork. Out of state, it gets an inspection.
If the 'Out of State' does not have the engine listed, it gets listed on the new California Reg.
I've wondered what happens when numbers don't match or in this case, the engine is blank.
I imagine it gets referred to the CHP. Dunno, never had the problem.

Did I mention the CHP called me for norton commando info. ST OF CALIF CHP 714 area code The officer found the article on my website and wanted a follow up and details. They were scrutanizing a specific bike.
I stand by my typical advice. Get it legalized BEFORE you put a nickle into it. The owner of the $12K full bling bling restoration bitza is going to be quite depressed.
