No e start for now

Lots of owners are fitting e starts on their Vincent twins.
I'm not rushing into that purchase just yet. This one has always been an easy starter, not much technique needed.

I agree 100% Glen.

Once I learnt how to use the decompressor properly, starting was an absolute doddle. And mine was higher than stock CR too (8:1 IIRC).

A Vincent that doesn’t start easily has something wrong with it, it really is that simple !

That heavy crank, the decompressor and the scythe kicker lever all work together as Irving planned.
This one is 8 to 1 also.
And I can stand on the compression!

When I first got mine running, fresh tight engine and 8:1 CR, the decompressors didn’t work. ALL of the ‘beast’ mythology seemed very real to me. Starting was a very dramatic, theatrical, affair indeed!

Then I got the decompressors sorted, got a quick lesson in how to use them (from PG RIP) and all of a sudden I’d got a Honda!

That's exactly the way I start my 612 Big Head Bullet. When I first built the motor I tried the usual Gold Star Venom approach of find compression, pull the decompressor, nudge over comp. release lever & kick. Repeat twenty times, collapse on floor, try again. Then I tried the above method & hey presto, instant Jap bike!

Pull the decomp. lever, kick start the engine & let go of the lever, as soon, or just before it fires. Simples!

I could start my b50 first kick by using the past tdc method
You need to nudge it past tdc until you feel the exhaust valve start to open
Then return the kickstart to the top and give a full swing
I did try the releasing the decomp lever just before compression but couldn't get the hang of it
With 10-1 compression and a very light crank everything had to right

I am not so familiar with the Vincent starting, hard or not, as I have only had the pleasure of starting one a couple of times. The times I did start one it didn't seem any harder than kicking my Norton and fired easily. I think the giant scything kicker added confidence. Knowing the drill helps too. The only classic bike that gave me nightmares was my old buddy's Velocette Venom with the three inch kicker. If he hadn't lived on a hill he would have never ridden it.

I live on a steep hill
Starts the commando fine but not the b50
It either locks the back wheel up or the clutch slipped
And that's in fourth gear

No e start for now
