The A65 motor mounts to the frame via a big lug on the rear with two bolts . The top bolt is doable but the bottom (5/16") is impossible no matter what. I tried a piece of threaded rod and even that refused to go in. Please tell me that it was essential to have the stud in place before putting the cases together. What's the trick? Magic dust?
The only way I can see of doing it is to remove the clutch and drill through the primary allowing a passageway for a 3" 5/16" stud. A stud would allow removal of the two rear engine plates when necessary. Please tell me there is a gentler way of installing this stud?
 
Again, PM Gavin on Britbike, he has covered this a number of times as there is a sequence that works.
 
Top and bottom are both bolt and nut. No stud.
First attach both mounting plates to the engine, with the bolts fitted loosely. Then drop the engine with plates and all in the frame.
That's at least how I remember it on my 1969 model.
It seems to be different for the later oil-in-frame model.
 
The bottom bolt will not clear the engine cases so it cannot be installed. I tried a piece of threaded rod - better than nothing - but that wouldn't clear either.
 
Ah, now I understand you mean the bottom bolt connecting the plates to the frame.
My A65 is in bits now, so I attach a picture from the Haynes manual for the non-oil-in-frame model.
Is this the one?
It should be a 3/8"UNF x 3", and you should be able to fit it from the right side.
next problem
 
It's hard to see in the picture. The motor I have has a big lug cast on the rear of the motor, top bolt is 3/8, bottom bolt is 5/16. I cannot get the stud to clear the right side case even with the mounting plates off.
 
So not the bottom frame bolt but the bottom engine bolt after all.
What is the length of the one you tried to fit?
It should be 2-3/4", and it should go in from the right.
 
I do like that frame ! …. Sorry for your troubles , hopefully you have eureka moment soonest , good luck !

The 2nd bolt from bottom(5/16) can't be installed after cases are put together( I don't think). Motor plate and 5/16 bolt need to be installed before cases are put together.
