I recently bought a new tool on ebay - good brand - Knipex
It is sort of a cross between multigrips (??) and a shifter (adjustable wrench?)
It is great because the little triangular windows (each side) tell you what size you have selected (Metric or SAE).
The spring-loaded button allows you to move the pivot to different settings. For each setting the handle has a limited range of jaw movement via the engaged "tit".
Great for the riding tool bag as it can eliminate so many other tools.
The one I bought is a bit over 7" long, but it comes in other sizes.
Used properly I don't believe it is potentially as damaging as either of the aforementioned tools.
A picture is worth a thousand words so...

Aerostich has had these in their catalog for years. Always wondered if they were worth a try.

Yes excellent tools. Like Snap-On you can feel the difference when using and handling them. But also like Snap-On $$$$$

we can get them here as well at a not too bad price. I'll be having one tomorrow the same size as yours --- after all 7" is enough for anyone

Had them for years. Single best investment in tools I ever made. Doesn't damage fasteners with its smooth jaws, doesn't lose fastener size once set and also has ratcheting ability.

"Made in Germany" but ships from China???

The difference is that the original tool mentioned always keeps the jaws parallel whereas the type you link to here are the waterpump plier type, where the jaws move in an arc.
I've just bought the smaller version of the original tool (120mm instead of 180) and I think it's great.
