Sometimes you can't resist. Even though you know you should. So I bought this lovely "period piece" below. Most of my buddies are encouraging me to perform a mercy killing. A small minority (one actually) wants me to get it running. If I have a plan, it is to use the Norton bits on my other Commando projects, and dispose of the rest of the parts (humanely). The engine is a nice tight 850. The bike is registered as a 1969, with a VIN ending in GS (garage special?) I think the tank is off a BSA, but not sure what model. The bike has twin Mikuni carbs. Is there anybody on this forum who actually runs twin Mikuni's on a Norton Commando? All my web research produced frustrated owners who gave up and went back to Amals or a single Mikuni. Can twin Mikunis really be as bad as all that? I was hoping they might be worth a try.

All and any advice on this fine example of the breed welcomed.

cool 8) actually, SUPER cool. 8) I would leave as is ... and ride it. And ... switch to SINGLE Mikuni if running great with minimal fuss --- is what you want :)

I SHOULD THINK SO TOO . . .

If you had a hacksaw you could cut the stauchions down .

ACTUALLY , put the remanants on fleabay , theres one born every day .

A Featherbad Wideline rep frame ( Manx ? ) & Short Roadholder Staunchions , 5.000.000 dollars for a alloy tank . Or make one with a sack of cement & a bit of sheet metal , and youd be getting somewhere .

Obbviously , all the Commando arts are of some use. Oneday. Perhaps .
But a 850 Manx street scratcher / Clubmans , would be worth more. Or is that Cost More . :P :P :P

Get it on video , if you do ride it . Id think youd look like a Baboon. All Elbows and knees out . and youd get blown off ( the back ) at the ton . At least if you had to wipe you nose . Now you know . :)

Despite the cumulative result, someone looks to have done some nice work to build this chopper. I wouldn't begin to tell you what to do with it, but have fun doing it.

All you need is a standard frame, new fork stanchions, seat, fenders, oil tank, sidecover, z-plates, handlebars, meters, rear rim & spokes, footpegs and tank, and you're all set!

Engine, swingarm, front wheel & brakes, rear hub, yokes and fork lowers are worth $1,500 at least...

I have a set of those "turn out" intakes for Mikunis, pretty nifty actually.

From late 1970s, I had these twin Mikunis on a Mark 3.

I recall they ran out of breath above 5000 rpm no matter what jetting was tried.

Still have the manifold if of use to anyone.

Keep the mikunis. The tank is big enough to go drag racing. You will need the performance boost.

Matter of Taste , but Id Prefer my touring thus , even with a 850 - hardly a downgrade .

where this'd portray the nearest thing to a frontal labotomy on wheels .

All I can see it excelling at , as is - is being ' unhurried ' able .

Its feked as far as a Commando is concerned so why not do a better job of chopperising it and keep it for a laugh.
