We all know what this is .

New Owner of '68 Commando

and it aint a P11 . http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NORTON-FUEL-T ... 233wt_1399

theres a few blokes here looking for one .

I don't recall seeing any frame numbers on the two prototypes I rode. They didn't have center- or prop-stands either. We had to lean them against lamp-posts, street signs or trees. Does anyone know what numbers the two bikes on the 1967 show stand were? They were silver, had the "Green Blob" tank badges (no depressions in the fiberglass) and orange seats.

Here's the clocks. And yes, there is no redline on these. Bummed the glass on the tach was cracked. I assume it can be replaced?

Yes, replacement Smiths "magnetic" instrument glass and bezel kits are available from the usual US/UK Brit bike/Norton/ebay sources although the bezel has to be crimped, and it's not always easy to make a tidy job of it with normal "hand tools".

(Commando speedo usually goes on the left side, tach on right)

Old Britts in Enumclaw has everything you could possibly need for your Commando. Some of the nicest people too.

Someone recently got the kits from eurojam and the bezel was a different thickness on the face, but it fit. Make sure you are getting the correct size when ordering, specify the bezel dimensions. I got one years ago and it was the same as original but I'm not going to tell you where I got it, it's not worth dealing with him, I hope he's not in business any more.

It's really not that hard to crimp the bezel on, just use a 1/2" drive extension and press it all around the back, then tighten things up with a pair of pliers, the back will look horrible, but it doesn't show. Try to get new gaskets for the glass too. Might as well clean it up and make/buy new rubber parts while it's apart.

If youre patiant , useing a thin screwdriver ( missuse of tools ) or / & a old thin bone handled round ended knife , like a butter knife , you can reuse it .

Glass can be got from a glass supplyer / cutter . If theyre any good .

To REMOVE , quitely prise a shap pointy thing behind the lip , with the instrument face down on the bench , on some old newspaper - so its flat & dosnt sccratch it .
The scret is to wait till youve got it just behind the lip , J U S T ease it out a IOTA , so the butter knife will get under the lip . Rotate it to circumnavigate the Diameter
so its a slight notch off fastened . The dang bezel should rotate on the case at this stage , or is the first object . Now its F R E E the buter knife is worked around and used to tease the bezel lip out ,
with great patiance & perseverance ,
Youll need to rotate three times , or ten .
The idea is N O T to STRETCH the thin metal . You actually get it way free , but maybe only half as much as right clear , and the butter knife is used to pry it outward ( upward - off ) A G A I N
patiantly . Likely itll chip or total the glass . Not to worry . Banging  the glass out & picking the bits from under the rim gives you more angularity for pryingit off .
Remembering to hold it upside down at this stage , so any schards splinters or chips go into your eye rather than the instrument .

When off , hopefully its evenly prised rather than kinky . You can use the bone handle rolling the bezel on edge on a board with paper so it doesnt scratch , to even it up a way out .
Just enought to get one side over & use the knife or two a bit like a tyre lever , to E A S E it down progressively ( 3 or 4 stages ) so it just P O P S on . Hopefully not stuffing the new glass .
Maybe gettem to cut two . Or flog the out of a old Triumph Herald car - or whatever .
Face down on the bench again , a pice of hardwood about 1/2 wide is used , progressively rotateing numerously to nail the lip to the flange .

If youre having a good day & ate your oats for breakfast , itll be umarked & seal down fimly no problem .
There might be a thin rubber gasket twixt glass & case . Often these are hard dry perished & stuck so therefore disitigrate . :( so treat that with caution too , if its survived . a THIN blade edge at rotationally easeing it free from where its at .

Hey now, be nice. That's somebody's great grandmother there! LOL.

That's a very nice set of pics/bike Barry. I assume it's like that now, not old pics? The girl is long gone Vivian Neves famous 'Norton Girl'.

I'm glad to see these early bikes coming out of the woodwork.

Photos were shot on my phone at Barber Festival INOA Turn 6 party. Poster says bike was originally owned by Brian Slark. Great original bike for referance on our restorations. Wonderful that these early bikes are becoming desirable :D

Be very careful with that train of thought, and policy.
You may not get a whole lot of warning when it lets go - and spears you head first into the tarmac.

Thats not Vivian Neves ?
She was of the 850 ads - and quite young at the time.

Nortons must have employed a small army of photogenic gals, and photographers, over the years...
