Nice bike.
Welcome to forum.
You mentioned oil leaks.
There are a number of threads on the site that talk about adding a reed valve to the engine vent line so it develops a negative case pressure that in a lot of cases stops engine oil leaks.
The most popular is the MikesSX650 that I put on my bike that was simple, cheap and no leaks.
You can just see it on the top of the oil tank with the large line coming up into it from the bottom and the line exits the valve on the end and enters the oil tank near the oil filler.

Thanks, I will have to look into that
can you guide me to where I might find one?

Nice bike! My tins went on the FedEx truck this weekend to Brent at Vintage-Vendor for paint similar to what you have. Blowed up motor and shitty powder coat job on the frame is another story all together.

Welcome to the world of Norton's. Well more than MOST of these guys are great and are more than a wealth of knowledge. I'm pretty sure the collective knowledge of these guys is greater than the sum of knowledge the factory had. If not, it sure seems like it.

I'm not sure if Jim Comstock (on this site) offers his breather for the Combat or not yet, but he makes a VERY nice unit that I am more than happy with.

Cheers and happy riding!

I looked at the site but couldn't find the breather so you may need to contact them, but they are the source we've all used for it.
There are other types being used including Jim Comstock's that looks great but if you are on a budget it can't be beat.

Here is a pic of the inside of my tank is this bubbling caused by failure of gel coat or is an apoxy coating failure?
Just wondering because it seems to me that the gentleman I bought it from was very knowledgable about the bike and it seems to me that he may have done it already but it would probably have been sometime over 10 ten ago.
you can see at the bottom of the photo there is a collection of something that resembles some kind of coating that has settled at the bottom of the tank.

Welcome Bonedigger! There are quite a few Nortons in Utah (I have 5 including my 750 Commando Formula 750/BEARS racebike, my yet to be revealed  Stealth Canyon Racer and yet to be built-850 shortstoke Commando racebike going into a Rickman frame for Formula 750/BEARS. There is a very active club here called the Utah British Bike Club http://www.utahbritishbikeclub.com and we meet the third Thursday of the month at rotating restaurants around SLC. We also hosted two National Norton Rallys in Torrey, Utah. The club also helps me with the AHRMA races Labor Day Weekend at Miller Motorsports Park called the Bonneville Vintage GP http://www.bonnevillevintagegp.com We have been getting quite a range of ages joining the club including younger guys in their 20's and 30's and our oldest member is 85 and still build's, kickstarts, and rides his vast collection of British Bikes. Be sure you read the forum before you purchase any coating for your tank. I would advise buying Caswell. Feel free to contact me directly if you need any help.

Thanks is this it?

Yes that's it.
There is a small mounting plate you can discard.
Between being wedged into position and the two hoses connected to it I don't need to actually hard connect it to the bike.
Maybe a nylon tie strap.
You can follow other breather threads and see others have located it in a number of places.
For me this was simple and with seat and tank on out of sight.

My picture actually shows the hose from the valve connecting to the front nipple on the top of the oil tank.
I thought this would work with the final vent hose coming out of the nipple on top of the tank by the filler.
This was a mistake as it caused some oil droplets to come out of the final vent hose onto floor.
My final installation has the line from the valve going to the nipple near the filler and the final line coming out of the front nipple.
No drips from this line now. Must be the routing of the vapors within the tank.

Bob

Two things I've learned about 1972 and later Commandos over the years. They leak oil if the crankcase is pressurized and the stock front brake master cylinder is way too big.

Bonedigger,

You can check out the Caswell coating in the yet to be revealed  Stealth Canyon Racer. It started out as a '73 Commando but it has the fiberglass
tank off my '70 Commando racebike (hasn't had gas put in since coating). Racebike now has an aluminum short circuit tank. If you come up tp Park City this afternoon, be sure to dress warm-it was 10 degrees F. last night. Looking out the window I can see the snowmaking guns going full bore at all three ski resorts-it's going to be chilly today!

after stopping by UTAHNORTONs' house yesterday I have determined that it is coated with caswells and that I am going clean it up and recoat it because some of the caswells is flaking of right at the fill hole.

On another note utahnorton I knew your race bike like familiar I have a poster of you racing it in my home office from the 2006 bonneville vintage gp I had it signed by Gary Nixon. I am going to have to get you to sign it also.
