Hi Robert, my php & sql experience is advanced. i am out of the country until mid march on vacation (New Zealand). I simply have not had time to deal with this. Maybe you can help as i have not had time and i will be busy when back. You are correct on your assumption about how the database is set up. I have already written the sql script to find all the dead links and it works, but thats as far as i got. Lets take this offline. I will pm or call on my return as any help is always appreciated, so long as i trust you,

Cheers

Hello all, i know this is a pain. Please can you try and research where the link should go to and post the broken link and the new link. Use the search function. I am doing that and it takes a while, so any help appreciated...

Jerry,

The link in this post is dead.

I think it should go here???

Later in the same thread, this post has a dead link.

I believe it should go here

Jerry,
Another broken link is found here.

https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/lockheed-caliper-piston-removal.7079/#post-87821

It should go to here.

I apologize for not being more helpful with past posts.

Old thread titles on accessnorton.com share a title commonality with the newly assigned/converted URL. By using Google, and maybe Bing, as well, you can enter the old title of the thread into Google, and it will likely provide the URL of the new page in the returned search results.

In the quoted text from chaztuna above, the first link works, but leads to a post containing the second link, which is broken. To find the new, working URL for the second post, or any other broken post, enter this in to Google:

site:accessnorton.com brake-caliper-teardown-yes-with-picture

The "site:accessnorton.com" portion of the text above limits the results returned from Google to only links on the accessnorton.com website. The second part of the search, "brake-caliper-teardown-yes-with-picture," is the title of the thread provided by chaztuna, and being used for this example. In most cases, if not all, the old thread title will also be the title of the new thread, too.

Depending on the title of the thread being searched for, specifying site:accessnorton.com, to return only results from accessnorton.com, may or may not be necessary.

When I first joined this forum, I was not adept at using the search function. Now I am. How do you think I found the correct links that I posted. I am doing this because Jerry asked us to notify him of dead links. That way, when he has the time, he can fix them.

PS Death before Bing! ;)

Your post above did contain two working URL's, which were to two entirely different threads. I was confused by this, thinking that one of the links you posted had already been corrected. The example I posted was a dead link that I found contained in one of the correct threads you posted.

I was merely trying to show everyone that Google could be used to easily locate the posts referenced by dead links.

And if you can get the search function on a forum to work adequately, you're a better man than me!

The functioning link was included to ease the workload for Jerry. Prior to this, I was guilty of simply telling him about a dead link. That put the onus on him to locate the correct link to make a repair.
Regarding search functions [on this or any other forum] define "adequately" ;) I sometimes can not find a thread that I have read, some months prior. I know that it exists. I simply can not couch my search terms correctly, to locate it in a timely fashion. This forum is a wealth of great information. I will often resurrect an old thread to ask a question or give input. Starting a new thread when there are already half a dozen on the same subject, simply makes locating good information, harder for all future users.

Thanks everyone. I will get to this. Super busy with life at the moment. Need more time to get things done

Jerry,
You get to it, when you get to it. Thank you for hosting this site. I've become such a PITA, that I will have to become a VIP member, simply to ease my guilt! After this post, I'm sure Jerry is wondering why he ever let me join!

I've found another one. Dead link is below

https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/another-kegler-s-arm-mod-thread.11598/#post-160668

It goes here

https://www.accessnorton.com/NortonCommando/not-another-spindle-thread.5592/

Maybe we should start a pool? First one to guess the date that I run out of dead links, or Jerry bans me, wins! :D

Chaztuna,

Both of the links in the above quoted post are functioning. In the thread the first link references, the dead link that your second link now correctly references is present.

This error is similar to your earlier post(s) in this thread, which I quoted in my attempt to explain how search engines could be used to easily find the renamed threads.

Robert,
My bad. I ASSumed that when I clicked on the post number [in this case #4 by Swooshdave] that the link provided would be for ONLY that post. In other forums I belong to, that's how it works. Here, the link is for the entire thread or at least the page the bad link is on. Go back and click on the link on Daves #4 post. You will see that it is dead. The second link I provided is where the dead link should lead to.

was off the forums for a bit, became aware of i think a software upgrade that resulted in dead links within the forums, fixed a few that i ran across in current stuff that i was looking over, but am seeing the dead links in older threads,

looks like there isn't a forum wide simple fix for this issue?

not sure if i should make fixes in old threads that would then revive them?

are we just pointing out dead links in this thread at this point?

Hello everyone,

Nothing is going to get done with the links for a while as I am busy packing and moving. It could be a few months.

If you find a dead link here is the best approach:

1) Find the url the link is supposed to link to.
2) Send me an email with the topic and post url that contains the dead link. Clearly let me know where the dead link is on the page. Include the new correct link that you have found (use search function).
3) If you are fixing your own dead links. You can login and update them yourself.

accessnorton at g-m--a----i~l dot c,om

Thanks- That will be a big help

Robert I know I have to email you. Sorry too busy right now for this task. i will get to it though.
Jerry
