I suspect I'm not alone here...
Just did my 7500 mile service and after everything else, had to wait for successful oil return for what seemed to be an eon (actually about 2-3 minutes?) for the oil to finally return to the tank.
This is my only bike with a cartridge filter - I understand it takes time to fill then (finally!) return to tank.
Am I the only weirdo that stands, torch in hand, waiting for the miraculous "return"?
Cheers

Interesting...I've missed out on the opportunity to worry about something! I've never paid any attention to the oil returning to the tank after an oil change; I just change the oil/filter and start the engine! :) I guess I figure that if the oiling system was working before the oil change, there's no reason to suspect it quit working during the oil change.

Well...at least that hasn't happened so far...

You can of course fill (or partially fill) a new filter thus reducing the time it takes for the oil to begin returning to the tank although it serves no practical purpose other than to indicate the scavenge system is working.

Thanks Les - good idea! (that I hadn't thought of)

Now you know how those of us with a AWSV feel .. Waiting and waiting and waiting for our sumps to fill with oil before heading back to the tank ;). I run with a oil pressure gauge but also check often on the return just see the volume being returned. Better be safe than sorry .

I am with you, Rob!

When I installed an oil cooler, the wait seemed forever. If there was anyone in earshot, they would have heard "Come On...come on!"

Slick

I have had a few nervous moments waiting for my oil pressure gauge to come up after an oil change or sitting for the winter. It typically never sits at zero - but lingers at 10-20 psi for longer than I would like to see (less than a minute typically), as it pushes all of the air out of the system.

I was always anal bout oil flow , after the winter layup and every oil change , I primed the oil line from tank to pump and always filled new filter before install , I did run a CNW anti-sump valve and figured my method was best practice … never had to wait long for oil to return to tank …. Thought filling an oil filter before install was standard practice for all ICE vehicles ….

"Thought filling an oil filter before install was standard practice for all ICE vehicles"

Many techs/shops viewed it the opposite - that filling a filter before installation could introduce dirt/grit into the system. Obviously, if you carefully fill the filter by ensuring that you're pouring the oil into the intake side of the filter, then the oil - and any particles - are filtered anyway! Like so many things - do whichever you are comfortable doing! I used to fill them; but I haven't in a long time.

I always check for the return oil as well. Once, many, many years ago, I saw it sputter and stop returning. Pulled the timing side apart and found a small bit of silicone sealant lodged at the return side of the pump. No idea where it came from, but once it was gone everything flowed the way it should.

And then went and bought a lottery ticket!! lol

Yes, however, the filter is normally between the oil pump and engine in that situation, not on the scavenge side of a dry-sump system as it is on the Commando where the oil is flowing back to the oil tank.
