About your P11, not sure TTI is making that different gearbox shell ??
Understand your point Pierre, I haven't seen an AJS/Matchless type shell either, even in 7R/G50 style race bikes I think they use the Norton mounting boss positions, I guess you would have to ask Bruce.

Have a look Steve at that wrongly called Commando parts , it's a G15/N15 or P11 shell the top and bottom bolt are not 180° apart but an akward angle ..........the specialist on this forum will add more !!

Thanks, I was not sure. I think you saved me $4K US and a lot of shade tree home garage redesign frustration. I think I'll just get a new clutch and live with the clunky AMC gearbox.

I am thinking about a 4 speed TTi box for the road and am curious about any quirks related to their product.

I don't think TTI currently offers a gearbox shell with the lug position to fit the P11, if that was your plan. Norton and Matchless g/b shells differ.

PS. I wasn't up to speed here. Sorry.

Sorry , I should have said nothing and when you realize your mistake , I will make you an offer of $1K.................;)
That is exactly what would have happened. Total loss

I made a get a clutch only decision last night before the reality of the gearbox being unique on the P11 came to light. I was just going to fade away on the topic.

I knew it was going to be a job to figure out how to get it mounted and make a position holding adjuster, but it sounds like real work. I'm allergic to real work.

Question #2...A friend is thinking about installing a TTI 5 speed in his Atlas frame. I know a fair amount of material needs to be removed from the right side engine plate but how about the left side?

I recognise it, I have an AJS with an AMC box!

However, you should talk to Bruce and not rely on his website, the people who work in his office, or our past experiences!

He makes several cases all with pretty much the same inside!

Talk to Bruce.....he started doing these boxes for Manx Nortons, not Commandos.

I have a Rickman with a TTi box in it. The engine is mounted like an Atlas! Sure I removed metal, but each and every box and engine plate is going to vary.

I didn't think the amount removed from the plates excessive, we are talking Dremel work here. I actually took more off the gearbox case to clear a frame boss to reduce the shaft centres for my belt drive.

(Even then Norman White told me he preferred them closer! But he got what there was.)

I had to do the same to fit Maney cases, as the drive side strengthening and the boss under the oil ways hit the frame rails.

Right you are Steve. That goes without saying regarding any forum on any subject anywhere.

People put V8's in lawn mowers, so just about anything is possible. Where there's a will there is a way. I'm running a little short on will.

Couldn't agree more with that thought and about forum advice in any forum on any topic.

After some consideration it'll be clutch first, maybe a gearbox later, but inflation is making high end performance parts less appealing for a poor boy. Besides the head has to come off my motor to get the engine out, so I can get the gearbox out. Once the engine is out partially disassembled staring me in the face, the temptation to rebuild it will be too strong. I must resist. :)

Just back from track. After three days fighting now only problems with 4th and 5th. 4th usually goes in at second try. 5th sometimes goes in before it's time to brake. 300 meters fighting. Winter job to find out what TTI has made wrong. Of all bikes I've ever had, the TTI is the worst to shift. Even the Norton dolls head works better. Never had any problem with AMC boxes, a number of BSAs, Burman and Velocette + some other bikes.

Well that should definitely not be the case, there’s something wrong in there for sure…

I don't race but 8 years with the TTI and happiness. Never had money better spent.
It is utterly bulletproof so far. Shifting is reliable and positive even with a backwards
lever. Someone was thinking of a four speed TTI why bother? The five is plenty strong.
I do wonder if I should have considered a six speed!

Same as Onder 8 years, mines racing. Never had to think about it. Prior to that I had done a Quaife (old) Nourish & a couple of 4 speed 1 Quaife 1 standard. Plus the loss of the meetings.
Ruinessly expensive but 8 years on a good buy.

Reasons I like mine:

First and foremost, an instant fix for the massively overstressed stock box.

Then, in terms of usage:

Lever travel is much reduced.

Zero ‘slop’ in the system, any / all lever input is immediately translated into selector movement.

Required lever pressure is reduced.

Gears select with a really positive feel, just ‘snick’ into place.

Never a fluffed gear or false neutral, when going up or down.

Much easier finding neutral even when stationary.

Ratio spacing on the 5 speed is perfect.

I fitted the TTi 'box to my 920 build for it's strength & to give me five gears. I think that gives the engine a much easier life when riding hard, especially on down shifts. Whilst the TTi has a more modern shift I have never found the AMC 'box to be a problem. As long as they are built with care they are a really nice piece of kit, & seem to be able to handle three times the power they were designed for. This in itself is remarkable when they are a redesign of an earlier Norton type, which was I believe a redsign of an earlier Sturmey Archer type.

Martyn.
