Thanks to the info on this forum I decided to try out the transmission cooler line filter on my 1971.

My local NAPA auto parts store had the Magnefine kit (part number 1-8512) that includes 4 nice hose clamps.
I also got 3-feet of their 3/8-inch transmission oil hose to replace the fuel grade hose I've used for too many years.

Total cost was $45. The filter should be able to have a long service life.

Edit: The label on the filter says: 'Replace filter after 12 months or 10,000 miles'.

Made in Australia!

I'll take another photo after installation.

So I saw that Jim mentioned that earlier. So it's a non-replacable filter, and it's $45? Since it filters (apparently) much finer than a regular spin on, how will you know when to replace it?

The filter kit was $32, the hose and tax brought the total to $45.
NAPA also had a filter only; the body was not marked with the Raybestos sticker and unfinned body for $22.

The original intended use as an automatic transmission cooler line filter would be for a long lasting, as in years, installation.
The magnetic feature is to remove metal particles, but probably wouldn't do much for engine oil chemical/degradation contaminants.

I'll give it a try and maybe remove and back flush it and see what comes out.

According to some internet postings the end can be unscrewed and reassembled. I bought a case of them from NAPA about 10 years ago and found they were threaded but the threads were glued so they could not be unscrewed.
The price sure has gone up since I bought mine even at the 16.00 prices I see on e-bay. I think the case price at jobber when I bought mine was around 8.00 each. Unfortunately I used my last one last summer. Jim
