My head steady is leaking!

:D

I just made a Ludwig style head steady that uses the original type isolastic PTFE washers. It wont leak that's for sure. [ fact I made 2 of the main part. one for the 850 and one for the 750 ] Just got to put the tank and air filter on now, start it and check the timing of the Boyer after my major hic-cup.

......I know someone who makes sealed headsteadies....
I've got one of those, I really like it :D well made, looks great & I get to use the stock springs from my MKIII on it too !

What is the best oil to refill once its venting and sealing is upgraded?

Well well... Every time the tank comes off , I put a drop or 2 of quality machine gear oil from a tiny squirt bottle on each end rose joint. The way it can leak out and stuff just has to get you flipping out backwards . New and Improved just has my mind a' - spinnin'. Another leak to deal with ? It just never ends.

I thought this was a joke thread but I guess not. You are replacing your head steady because there is a little oil on the outside of it? You are supposed to put a few drops on each rod end every so often. It looks like a little drooled down the side. OMG.

Rags?

in what post did the OP, Norton73, say that he is going to replace his head steady?

Yes, I was for the most part joking about yet another oil leak on a Norton :D

I can't bring myself to just toss this one and replace with a Comstock item, but you can believe the '75 mkIII will get one.

Btw developers tests of first rod links found the best for our Commandos are the Lords Elastometric ends which have rubber mounted swivel eyes to isolate even sooner better and longer as no lube needed, if ya can source em.

I have a source for them -and I have tried them. I did not like the feel of even the hard rubber compound in the links.

But building links with the rubber bushes was cheaper and easier. Jim

I have a Comstock head stead on my 1972 Combat and am very happy with it: sharp handling with no additional vibration.
Until I read this thread I never thought about lubricating the rod joints.
I believe the joints on the Comstock head steady don't need lubricating.
Jim, can you please advise??
