mounting emgo fake dunstalls

as an experiment I got a pair of emgo dunstall replicas for a very inexpensive price I mounted one today, before the hurricane started bearing down, using the supplied muffler strap and one muffler rubber to the original muffler bracket does anyone have a pic of how you mounted yours or will the one strap/one rubber one bracket hold? it looks a little sketchy to me

the one strap mount will likely only work to hold the muffler in place if you are able to install 2 bolts from the muffler (slide mount) into 2 spots on the bracket, otherwise they will start to droop.

i have no pictures to share since i had to disassemble the PO bad workmanship in this area. i will be mocking up a triangular plate with 2 mount points for the rubber mounts and 2 mount points to suit the muffler mount. but this isn't happening till late this yr or early next.

Skip the multi-holed bracket that accompanies the mufflers, and mount directly against muffler plate as you would a pea-shooter. So the threaded end of the bolt, which would normally be threaded into the female threads on a pea-shooter muffler, will hold the dunstall on with low-height nuts located inside the slotted mount that's welded to the dunstall muffler.

Probably no room for nylock nuts, so you'll need to use appropriate thread locking compound. A suitably long and thin piece of steel to jam the nuts as the bolts are tightened will be required to give them a good cinching.

Washers fitted at any of the mounting points along the stem of the bolt may help with spacing, as well as a washer under the nuts to protect the mounting points of the muffler itself.

I can do T bolt pieces for Dunstalls that don’t turn round in the slots. PM me.

A vid would be good & save me some head scratching because I'm considering this move soon. Only problem is I want to find some in black rather than chrome. No shine for me.

Sorry, I gave you some bad/inaccurate information in my previous post. The bolts can be fitted with the head of the bolt inserted in the slotted mounting bracket welded to each muffler, so nylock are usable. Use of a long piece of metal (I use a long, thin flat blade screwdriver) to wedge the bolt head while tightening is advised, though.

I never tried using a carriage bolt, but the thought just occurred. The bracket on the muffler can easily be bent, so probably not a good idea. A square headed bolt might be an option, too.

If possible, get a washer on the bolt inside the muffler mounting bracket, to help spread the load on the inside of the welded on muffler mounting bracket.

And washers can be used at various points if needed to help reduce interference with the nuts holding the studs of the rubber muffler mounts.

Again, sorry for the inaccurate earlier advice.



Am interested to see more of Bernhard's t-bolt implementation.

If you buy new, a plating shop could dip them and you could then paint.

used nylok and loctite and washers and right side went on like it had eyes left side one coming tomorrow in post so will put it on then

Is there something wrong with my eyes, or does that look as good as I'm seeing it?
 
per my previous post, and as R_N noted if it lines up with t he factory bracket, then use them. i prefered the bolt in the muffler slot
 
That looks awesome. I had an original Dunstall 2-into-1 pipe kit with the decibel silencers and had to fabricate mounting plates from aluminum stock and it looked terrible. Ultimately the loss of a center stand and ground clearance issues made me switch back to original pipes. I never tried to adapt the mufflers to stock headers like you have. Very well done.
 
thanks the stock mounting plates attached to muffler slot with two bolts and nylok nuts worked perfectly

What is the thinking behind the Dunstalls?

Performance?
