Emgo/Dunstall mufflers?

Every so often I think about changing something just to change it and am thinking about buying a set of Emgo/Dunstall muffs. I have never had an original Dunstall so I don't know how the two compare. Is the Emgo basically the same internal design/construction as the Dunstall? I see that the listings for the Emgo show two different models, a wide-mouth and a reverse cone. Which one corresponds to the style of the "original" Dunstall that was typically fitted to a Commando?

Original Dunstalls were tapered cones back to the exit where they were slightly reverse-tapered for the last 3 inches or so. I have a set of Emgo Dunstall copies that are the same shape, although not quite as slim. Dunstalls were a straight-through design with a multi-tube exit baffle, a cluster of small, short tubes welded together. The Emgos also have an internal baffle screen which I'm not sure the originals had. The "wide mouth" model corresponds to the original shape.

When I had Dunstalls on my bike in the late 70's, someone once remarked that they looked like a Gatling gun from the back. They sure sounded nice.

Some damfoolidjit came up with aftermarket bike mufflers whose pipe-cluster rear baffles actually rotated with exhaust pressure and imitated Gatling guns.

i have the emgo dunstall lookalikes this weekend i took the 'baffles' out and put a 1/2 drill bit in a drill bit extension and opened up the screen like plate about halfway down the baffle tube the fiberglas packing was toast after only 100 miles i repacked but dont think it will last very long either,,,,,,very happy with fitment and sound

I have the dunstall replicas on my 70 and peashooter on my 69. The dunstalls have 4500 miles and sound great. I like the sound of the dunstall better. Not any louder.

I've got Dunstalls on mine. There is embossed engraving on the real ones, among other things it says "Decibel Silencer, Made in England", etc. There is a joint about 2" from the exit, but hardly noticeable taper, maybe 1/8". They do have the gatlin gun barrels. I posted a picture in this thread, but photobucket has blurred it out a little.

I had a Dunstall two into one into two with genuine decibel silencers which I referred to as dB enhancers - but I sure did like the sound, especially third gear deceleration in the Massey tunnel.

I use Dunstall copies (not sure if they're emgo) freely available from various UK vendors. Like Alan, I find the acoustic wadding is pretty crummy and doesn't last, they then sound a bit harsh for my tastes (and my neighbours). Shame as the basic construction is decent quality. So I've experimented with acousta-fil, a wadding that expands to fill the available space once it gets hot.
Very popular with kit car fraternity over here and seems to work and has lasted well on bonnie and my laverda after market pipe (not Dunstall type) . I tried replacing the "rocket launcher" end plate with self tappers but these tended to loosen off, so reverted to pop rivets.

In 48 years of Norton ownership I've tried numerous silencers. I liked the way that the 2-1-2 Dunstall system worked but it rusted out fairly quickly. The
Dunstall and the copys of the Dunstall slip-ons also worked well and lasted a bit longer than the 2-1-2 . It was hard to beat the original peashooters as fitted to my 72 Combat. In the late 70s early 80s I used a pair of Contis that worked extremely well and also satisfied my need for more noise. This has been my favorite set up but it was a spendy option. Thank goodness the local Ducati shop owed me a favor which allowed me to get them at cost. Peashooters from then on.

I have a pair of clone Dunstalls and I must say they sound quite good without being too loud. In fact they sound less raspy than a set of AN peashooters.
But my question would be which set actually performs better? Seat of the pants is no way to really know. Since I dont have dyno access perhaps someone could have a go and report back.

i found that acousta fil stuff for sale online it was pretty cheap..about $15 but shipping from UK was $35 and no place i see has it in US......ok anyone know if it's sold in US or what a good alternative is? I used the fiberlas insulation from our new hot water heater blanket as replacement for the original which had the sturdiness of toilet paper

I ordered set of Emgos but won't be down in Mexico to install them on the bike until Dec/Jan so won't know until then whether I like them or not! ;)

Here are the EMGO mufflers on a Triumph Daytona. I know it’s not a Norton but if it can make a wee 500 sound that beefy you can only imagine how good a Norton would sound.:p
