MK3 Rearsets and their exsistance (2013)

I emailed RGM Norton about their Mk3 rear sets. Here is the reply I received:

"Thanks for your enquiry. Rearsets are made here in site in our own workshop, unfortunately they are out of stock. We are going to make a batch of rearsets but we are still awaiting deliveries of parts we have had made and are also waiting until we can get other parts made before we take up a lot of space as there are several different types of rearsets. I cannot give you a date as to when they will be back on the shelf. All I can do is put your enquiry into our folder of enquiries and hopefully we will contact you closer to either the end of this year or beginning of next year to let you know that we have made a start."

Grandpauls comment about RGM rearsets was in response to my earlier post... The rearsets for sale in the eBay link I posted are RGM ones made previously!

They have been "progressing" with them again for quite a while now, waiting for a new batch would not be a quick fix for sure!

Was anyone following the set of RGM rear sets on UK eBay that finished today? I'd decided I'd stick in a bid of £250, as far as I can tell the price of new ones when they were available. Crikey, I was blown out of the water as they went for £360! Surely this proves there is pent-up demand for someone, be it an existing supplier or someone new, making decent-looking, well engineered solution at around the £250 mark? I'm almost tempted to design a set myself.

Out of interest, would people with experience of LH & RH variants of Commando believe that the gear change quality is improved or made worse by the change to LH change? A set of rear sets could be used as an opportunity to switch back to RH change; how much changed in the gearbox between Mks 2A & 3?

I've used both, and the left hand shift definitely adds some slop in the linkage, but still eminently rideable. Direct right hand shift with no extra linkage is the most solid feeling. I also ran a Dunstall crossover kit back in the '70s that converted the normal right hand shift to left side. It worked ok, but I eventually went back to right side shift.

yesterday TIG welded 25 sets of the shift side for the MK3 in stainless, they will be in the metal polisher today,
the right side will be a few weeks away as I'm waiting for a MK3 kickstarter to arrive to check clearance.

Interesting, thanks.
Madass, your set looks pretty proper, keep us posted; I reckon you might sell a few if the price is good.

By the way, has anyone noticed that Unity Equipe list a set for the Mk3? Anyone tried them?

Sounds great! Will you supply to the UK when you're done? Any ideas what the price might be?

Look on ebay (uk site) there is a Norman Hyde set on a the minute an for mk3 it says. They have cast plates with word Hyde on them. They look good quality from the photos but I never knew Hyde made them for Commando but they look far better than most I've seen. Though I have a mk2a so they would be of no use to me.

Toppy, I appreciate the heads up on the Hyde rear sets. Just wanted to let you know I was the high bidder on the auction. They ship from England tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Nice to know you got them. Mine is a mk2a so they would not fit but I did like them far more than normal stuff out there. I would've bid on them to if I had mk3 as I have never seen any like them before. Maybe you could post a photo or to when you have fitted them.

You'll love them!! So much better riding position

I ended up converting (reverting?) to right-foot shift, and fabricated a bracket to mount a rear brake master cylinder that is easily actuated by a generic rearset linkage for my Dreer prototype bike (75 e-start engine). However, if I found a set for my '75 for a reasonable price I'd buy them.

MK3 Rearsets and their exsistance (2013)

Just a question, something I can't quite get my head around--looking at the picture of the finished items, the mounting blocks appear to be the wrong way around. Standard Commando footrests have a three bolt mount, with the apex of the triangle facing towards the rear of the bike. In the picture the apex of the triangle on each side mount appears to be pointing to the front of the bike . Or is it just the way they have been arranged for the photo? The pivot angle on the pegs would seem to point to this as the answer. And I would assume that the standard footrest mount would be need to be retained as mounting for the master cylinder and front pivot point for assembly, just by removing the standard footrest? And the RH peg would need to be folded to operate the kickstart, as in every other set of rearsets I've looked at?

its probably the way they are sitting in the pic. yes they retain the standard Z plates.
This, from an email I just received from a Norton owner that just received his set.
"They showed up yesterday!
They look great and went on without any issues. Hopefully I can get out for a ride tomorrow. "

Both footrests are folding.

Has anyone made progress on manufacturing the rear sets?

I can't find any vendors that are currently selling the Mk III rear sets. Does anyone know of any vendors?
Any updates on MK3 rear sets?
