I remember a thread a while back that said the hose routing illustration in the manual for the oil lines on the Mk3 was incorrect. Is this true? Now that all is going together on the bike, I have entered the self doubt phase. I looked at the book and looked at my bike. 2 different stories. I did mark the hoses. The two in particular I have in question are the ones coming out of the oil tank. The manual shows the upper line on the tank (return line?) dropping straight into the filter. The lower being fed in behind the oil pump on the outside of the 2 line fitting. Sound right? Thanks again all.

I don't seem to remember that?

That is correct, the outer line is the feed, as shown in the manual diagram, and is how my own Mk3 oil lines are connected. http://www.oldbritts.com/oillines.html

Thanks, L.A.B.
I cant remember where, then I read that. I think I let it get into my head instead of trusting my instincts. I know I made note of how they were routed. Looking at it, it only makes sense. Glad to have a knowing shoulder to tap on every now and again---it sure helps with those seemingly small questions to avoid an unfortunate incident. Thanks again.

I always fall back on removing the lines at the manifold and kicking on the starter; the one that sucks down the oil level is the one that gets fed from the lower banjo fitting with the strainer. (this works on all brands, years and models).

The other one goes to the OUTER feed connection of the oil filter, (if so equipped), if no filter, it goes back to the oil tank upper fitting.

The INNER connection on the oil filter goes back to the upper oil tank fitting.

The diagram in the Norton workshop manual can be confusing. The red and blue colors being confused with that of blood flow charts. I believe the colors represent oil temperature in the Norton diagram. Blue being cool oil, hence the feed side, red being hot return oil. I do like Paul's method, can't miss.

I've never thought that diagram was confusing? Blue being the oil feed to, and red, the return from the big ends and rockers? So seems reasonably easy to understand.

I think there was a post here mentioning that the first parts book after the filter was introduced (1972 750) shows the filter in the feed side. Later books including of course the Mk111 have it correctly.

Yes, I checked that, the oil tank group illustration in the 1972 parts book does show the oil lines incorrectly drawn.
