As my MK3 was partially dismembered when i acquired it and the battery side cover was "off", so it has taken several months through elimination to discover was the small "stainless Steel" ????? support arm was , and now i know... Side cover support.. The fittment as i have it must be wrong or something missing... On the support arm that is bolted to frame it has a rectangular hole in it, which appears to be of factory quality, but to two small holes 1/8"dia that had pop riverts "ground off" with a plug of rivet trapped in the holes, which were removed prior to powdercoating.. Which make me thing there is a bit missing.. I have trawled through my available references books but none show the side plate "locking mechanism" in detail.. Can somebody guide me to a reference source or post a picture.. The correct terminology would help me search also.. Thanks........

Dzus spring is what you are missing.

I don't see it on the part catalog. If you drop Ella or Fred at Old Britts an email I'm sure they can take care of you.

Just in case you are not aware, the "support arm" shown in your photo is not a standard Mk3 part, as the original Mk3 side panel support is an integral part of the (black, plastic) Mk3 airbox.

Yep that sounds correct i run single Miki, hence the fabricated s/steel support ... Just now trying to find a Dzus fastener complete, standard if possible plenty out there that will do the job but a bita time spent here may find "new/copy" of original.

The black plastic looks a little flimsy; I'd try and figure out something stronger to hold the side cover on.

You didn't cite the thread you were referring to that you'd found here discussing the same subject, so I'll post the URL to the thread I found here about this, in case it's something different than what you were looking at. It also might interest readers to go back and see the solutions others have implemented:

At the current end of the above thread referred to, the suggestion is made that a 750 sidecover can be used on a MK III, which would not be correct unless the toolbox pocket of the sidecover had been removed. MK III models -- and also MK IIA models, I believe, being equipped with the large plastic airbox -- have different battery trays, which do not permit the fitting of a sidecover with the toolbox pocket.
