Missing Bolt?

Now that is really weird, that hole should line up with the crank case holes to clamp it all together. I've seen 850 cradle fractured there and patched by double plate thickness, but yours just seems bent to rear shearing off the bolt and moving cradle edge away from the machined flat of engine flange. What's the other side show?
 
Ooh er, looks like the bolt has snapped off. If the head is on the other side, it would require taking the primary side off to get it out or mayke use a hacksaw blade to cut it off & push it through. If it is a nut on it, you might be lucky & get it off & push it through.
Wouldn't stop riding it over that though, unless another one goes.
 
Yes, I looks to me like the bolt has sheared off somehow. As I said what's left is 1" into the hole.

I have not noted any problems, just found this in a routine inspection.

Does this bolt go all the way through?. I wonder if I can back it out with a stud remover? I'd hate to have to do a full dis-assembly.

The nut hasn't fallen off has it, & left the bolt loose?
Have a look at the other side.
 
Yes as straight through and true as all the others so not good news at all but
not that big a deal unless leaks or the others let go, then no dire emergency
just leaks and vibes and depression to fix.
 
It's not a bolt, it's a stud with nuts on each side. If you can get a hack saw on the drive side to cut it off, and you can pull it out the timing side somehow, you can replace the stud and nuts if you can get at the drive side nut. Otherwise the inner chaincase has to come off, or you could not worry about it until something else happens. If it were mine, I'd fix it. Taking off the chaincase inner is a couple hour job.

You guys are great!

No leaks either, so I'll just take a closer look from the left side & lift primary if I have to.

Not that big a deal. In fact, I'd be disappointed if the Norton was as trouble free as the BMW.

Try it for the subtle reactions or cheering to eyes dropping to ground.

One gets a great sense of achievement in fixing things. It cannot be argued that Nortons do provide opportunities for achievement.

The bolt (or stud) turned into a simple fix. It had not sheared off, but had lost the RHS nut.

I was able to push the stud back through from behind the primary case add washer, lock & nut & realized instant satisfaction!

Nice to hear an easy solution. Photo fooled me as could not see cradle and case holes lined up. Add these to list to nip up now and then.
