Have one of these on my 72 750 and she's pretty leak free. Want to install one on the 850 I'm building and went to his website and the one available is different from the one on my bike. It has a single mounting lug where the older one had two. The hose nipples are in a different location also, both out to one side instead of one out the bottom and one out the side. Has anyone installed this newer version and are the hose sizes the same? Where did you mount it?

Old version
Mikes xs650 breather valve.

It will do the same job, I didn't mount mine on anything, I cut my breather hose close to the back of the timming side conected the reed to the hose and the other end of the hose I run into a catch bottle that is mounted between the rear engine plates, I don't run my breather to the oil tank at all, but my Commado motor is set up in a Featherded frame so different to the Commando with more room, my reed sits nicely between the hoses with out any mounting at all on the bike and is out of the way.

I have the same question as htown, and more:
Some places show drilling a hole in this thing. Is this a good idea? Mandatory?
Why wd we do that and if a good idea, where and how exactly shd it be drilled?

I've mentioned it in previous threads regarding case vents - Mike uses many sources for 'similar' reed valves, wherever he can get lot purchases. Not all makes and models are the same, although they're similar enough that all can be adapted for use.

It's a great reed valve. Cheap , and one of the best things you can install into a Commando. Just do it. :)

Does anyone have a source for these in the UK ? I've looked many times but just seem to find car ones which are usually far too big and ugly.

To get them in the UK search for EGR valve in motorcycles on ebay, lots come up, just pick the one that suits your planned pipe routing.

I use the Yamaha YZF R 125 EGR exhaust valve, it has the pipes at 180 so it fits in a straight pipe run.

I mounted mine high, above the battery, the idea being liquid (oil & water vapor) will drain to the respective sides,(crankcase & oil tank) and keep the reed valve free to meter vapor, and not fouled with sludge. JMWO

I've got the older style (two mounts). I'm not using it anymore since I switched to the Comstock Sump Breather. PM me if interested.

Thanks, got one the same as you use

+1 on the Yamaha reed valve from a 125 - it cost me the princely sum of £5 from eBay:

Mikes xs650 breather valve.

It even came with the upstream filter, but I didn't bother to use it owing to a lack of space.

+1+1+1+1!

I did this some 15 years ago. Back then Nortoneers were still searching for the magic crankshaft seal made of unobtainium. When I told them a reed valve crankcase breather would eliminate crankcase oil going into the primary case, I was told by many that I was a dreamer or some such thing. I wonder if they are still searching for that 'magic' seal?

My xs reed valve came a few days ago. Looks like the inlet is close to 3/8'. The outlet on my 74 850 engine is closer to 1/2". I found a hose reducer to go from 1/2 to 3/8. I wouldn't think that would harm the function? The reed valve is not marked as to what is inlet or outlet. You can blow into one, but not the other. I'm assuming that is the inlet?
