The tab that stops my kickstand in the down/ forward position sticks out of the mount about 1/16th inch and is about as robust as the tip of a flat screwdriver. This seems a bit weak to me. Is this normal or do I need to weld or?? something more substantial there. The bike sits on the center stand when parked but for gas and short stops I do use the kick stand. I worry if this tab gives way, down goes the bike.

Well if it's simply the standard prop stand tab then there should be no problems. Do you have a photo you could post to see it ? It's a prop stand only for temporary/casual parkings. Kicking on it's weight will eventually bend things. You are supposed to kick off of either the prop or center stand. Some people master this better than others. If the forward stop position is wearing then of course the option is a weld buildup either to the tab or the prop itself. I've seen this wear from those who overenthusiastically kick whilst on the prop.

Mine is worn and I need to build it up with some weld. Since I will need to remove the electronic ignition components, it's a winter project. It goes too far forward, something I've seen on other bikes.

I don't understand what you are referring to as a "tab"?
When extended, the side stand should normally rest against the outer face of the stand bracket plate.

Are you sure the stand pivot spacer [14] isn't missing or the wrong diameter bolt used?: http://www.oldbritts.com/1975_g17.html

I had the same problem with my 75 Mark 3 side stand, I cleaned up and built up the worn area with a bead of weld then ground flat and refitted to determine how far and at what angle I wanted the stand to stop at. Then I marked the weld build up and removed the stand., ground to my markings and then refitted. You need to make sure that you have the correct bolt and washer fitted otherwise there will be slack which will result in rapid wear of your handiwork.

Finally got a picture of my kickstand mount. It looks from photos members posted that my mount has worn down and the little tab is all that is left. I guess it needs welding to build it up and ground flat. When I got the bike, the Electric start didn't work so PO may have kick started it on the side stand and worn it down. Thanks to those who responded.
