I don't have one of these (or I don't remember where mine is).

Please post pictures and dimensions of yours. How much length at either end works best? Can you clear the backbone tube?

Thanks.

1/4" allen key hacksawn to 3/4" from the middle of the centre of the long bit.

Is this the modified allen wrench for the 4 Carburettor Fixing Screws to secure manifold to cylinder?

Yes, if you know of others I'd like to hear of them too. I didn't need any others on my build.

I cut the short end about half way.

From the other thread which started this - Swooshdave: "It only works with the air filter off"
Why would you be removing the carbs with the air filter on? Dunno I never even thought of doing this.

Dave, do a search on this site. Re: 932 amal carb and the FNG. Was posted Dec. 23, 2009. There is a picture.

Huh? I thought everyone had one of these.

If it were an inch or less, it would be a bit better, but I got tired of grinding and my little 4" grinder was wearing down. It works, but is a bit tight. The shorter the better.

Re: the air filter, I have to remove the carbs to get the ham can off. Only way that works for me without taking all day and lots of kicking the dog (kidding).

It's a required carry item.

Cut about ¾" off the ball end of a ¼" Bondhus allen wrench. Chuck this bit of allen wrench in a ¼" socket, ¼" drive w/extension and ratchet. No sweat to remove or install manifold bolts.

To tighten the bolts in case they come loose, let's say, hypothetically on a ride to the coast last weekend.

I saw that one. I think it was Les'. No measurements given, IIRC.

I have my orginal that came with my Norton since new, its the only thing I have left out of the orginal tool kit so I will go down the shed later and messure it up for you, do you want inperal or mm mesurements, and I use it all the time on my manaifolds since new.

I didn't know they were part of the original tool kit. Very cool if you can post pics of it.

I went to Harbor Freight after my club meeting yesterday. I picked up a set of allen wrenches for a whole $2.99. The bike started running really, really bad on the way there. I thought I had a loose carb or something. It was popping badly like a horrible air leak. I managed to make it home and took to shortening the wrench. I started with a hacksaw and went through two blades before taking to the bench grinder.

I tightened up the manifolds (they were a little loose even after being locktited, of course I'm using cheap Harbor Freight thread stuff so I deserve it). And while I was down there I happened to notice the balance tube between the manifolds was off on one side. Note to self, that will cause poor running because of a massive air leak...

Fixed that and the bike ran great.

I use Craftsman "knob headed" allen wrenches. A bit of a fiddle, but the right tool for the job.

Home-made copy of the Craftsman tool I just mentioned...

Oh, yes, craftsman tools also have that silly lifetime replacement deal...
