I am unhappy with the front brakes on my Commando. My question is this: Will a Magura 13 mm front master cylinder (about $100) work well on my bike. Secondly ,will my existing Venhill braided cable fit into the Magura master cylinder? Thanks,PhillySkip

I think a 13mm M/C would help your front brake performance substantially. Not familiar with the Magura unit, but most modern units use a banjo fitting on the master cylinder. Easy enough to change out the fitting on your Venhill hose.

Another option would be to install the master cylinder sleeve kit into your existing unit. This keeps the original look and eliminates the need to adapt switchgear. I did this on my Mk III & I'm very pleased with the results.

Thanks Joe ,I'm not really concerned about keeping the "original" look so sleeving my unit is not an option for me.

I had the Magura mc unit for about seven years and loved it, since switch to CNW full Brembo set up

didn't care about losing a kill button on the stocker that hardly worked anyway

it will make a very nice difference in your braking, don't think anymore, just do it

there is a new master, Magura I think, which works with the commando switchgear......... check the andover norton site.

I have a 1/2inch=12.7mm on mine. If I were buying a new one, I'd go with a 12mm over a 13mm. Magura makes both, I'd go for the stronger braking one because I ride with one finger on the brake all the time and like the response.

Are there a bunch of original master cylinders floating around looking for homes? For heaven sake don't toss 'em into the bin. They aren't that easy to find anymore.

I have a Brembo 12mm master cylinder and it works really well. I think really for fast road use this is all you need to do to have excellent brakes. I have some modern bikes and this compares favorably with those. I think 12mm is going to be better than 13mm.

If you are talking about the one's at MikeXS, yes, they work great. I actually use the Yamaha OEM that he sells for $78.
In addition, I use a MKIII LH switchgear which does everything I need it to do. Only the brake light is needed on the rh side.

You may need an adapter for to brakeline. Check Venhill USA for everything in this area. They have a kit that offers any combination of fittings on either end and made to length for $42.

I have the Brembo Master kit from CNW. (Just the master and brake line). Stock caliper. Works Great!!!! I highly recommend it.

Hello,

I brought the front master cylinder from madass140, it came with a stainless braided hose and fittings, and fits the standard switchgear, $150, have not fitted it yet, but looks a nice piece of kit, delivery was very quick, its listed as 1/2", so not quite sure what the actual metric size is, from what I have read, any 12 or 13mm bore mastercylinder will be a great improvement, or as said, there are a few options out there to sleeve the standard mastercylinder, which I shall be keeping safe!!,

To everyone who jumped into the discussion thanks much. I'm going to order the 12.7 mm one from Mike's .I'm thinking it will do the trick. To Russ,I won't shitcan the original.....promise.

Got a further question....will the Venhill steel braided line that is presently on my bike fit into the Magura master cylinder or will I need to get another line with a banjo bolt attachment on the master cylinder end? Are the threads from my Norton master cylinder the same as those on the Magura? Thanks PhillySkip

The Magura MC will/should incorparate a banjo. If you have a Venhill line you may be able to add one to it. The universal end lets you add virtually anything to it.
With this bolt,

So you're saying that the adapter will screw onto the" male end" of my line and I won't have to cut the line? Thanks.

Yes, the Venhill line that I have has a swivel that will fit an array of banjos. Straight, 20, 45, 70, 90 degree bends, and bolts 10mmx1.00, 10mm x 1.25 and 3/8 x 24 which I think is the Norton thread.

But I am not sure of what you actually have.

I too am thinking about ordering a Magura unit from MikesXS.
They also sell a SS braided hose and a brake switch.
I would like to do a 'one stop shopping' trip if possible.
Does anyone know if those three things are all that is needed to replace the original master?
Another fitting perhaps?
I asked them via email (no phone that I can find) but no reply.
Thanks for the help...

the brakeSwitch is incorporated into the master cylinder. although you will have to run the wires into your headlamp shell in hook it up.
you can see it in my previous picture just below the banjo.

Thanks Pete - I see that now.
I guess my only concern is what fitting to get that works at the bottom of the hose to connect to the standard Norton hardware.
Or maybe I just use the old connector on the new hose?
