I got a really nice Mk 3 recently, all pretty standard and original, still has the black box air filter and blackcaps. Compared to my other one it's a tad slower off the mark (that one has a 34mm mikuni and peashooters) I don't want to put a mik on this new one, but would the earlier type air filter box fit, or will I have to cut away the battery tray away. I'm not unhappy with the bike, but would like a bit more ooomph without resorting to the hack saw.

Got a picture for us ? My Mk 111 lost the pipes but kept the airbox and seeing as I don't wail on it thats what I stuck with. The bean cans are the most restrictive element.

Stock, my MK3 came of course with the bean cans and the black air box, Jets at 230. I lived in Colo. and went to 220 jets. Now (a lot of years later, living in New England) I'm running a K&N air filter and Taiwanese pea shooters. They are straight through and sound good. Also 260 jets. Pea shooters are not all created equal. I also have a set of original MK2's and they are not straight through but rather are baffled and as quiet as the bean cans, probabley just as restrictive too.

Useing the keep it simple & add lightness principle , Who Cars . The peashooters after 72 could be fitted with ' MUTESA ' ( WERE ) .
A screwdriver / cold chisel / drill & application of cunning could remove them . Silly little wotsits semi blocking outlet .Causing a
caburation flat spot . Real mufflers were thin wall glass Pack perferated tube straight through . the exhaust went B L A T .

People with senile dementure found this offensive . Could wake babies , rattle windows & disturb Horses . Decutch & neutal Throttle To Pass such creatures .

I just spent the weekend getting rid of one of those off my bike and refitting the original style of air cleaner housing but with a K and N filter inside.
It might add lightness but IMHO removes style ....but each to their own...
Also made up a nice bracket for the ignition key....thought about moving it to the dash but.....nah.

Maybe check if it has the two 064839 airbox intake venturis still fitted? If so, try it with them removed.

No cutting required as far as I know, however as has already been suggested, try the peashooters with the black airbox?

Plus postage to UK, + 20% VAT, handling charges, etc.etc.

K&N has a manufacturing plant in Warrington, UK, (only a few miles away from where trident sam lives) and they can be bought from UK suppliers cheaply enough.

Thanks for the replies.
I wasn't even aware of these intake venturis, the other Mk 3 bikes I've owned came with aftermarket filters, I will remove them and see if it makes a difference. I never liked the look of the K&N double air filter on an Interstate, too much gap behind the carbs.
