Fairies, pixies, Murphy’s law, etc...

Like most practical, sound minded fellows, I dismissed all such old wives tales and witch craft.

But then I started motorcycle racing, and one of the many things that I learnt whilst doing this is that ALL of the aforementioned is absolutely 100% indisputably TRUE.

This is not a discussion. It is fact.

Car & bike wrecks, sports in school and hard fast living had me hurting before 25, so maybe back to the womb and start over again avoiding the fun stuff..... Just think about it.... At least I'd have my folks again.
Down side being having to learn how to do English bikes all over again.... Very difficult for Americans because we need stuff right now. There...... I've completed the derail and cleverly insulted everyone hanging about except the Aussies.

You've insulted the Aussies by doing something cleverly.

That was naughty.
Anyway GP has me pondering the switch integrity in a serious manner presently.... Could be something to that because the battery has been going flat after sitting 4-5 days, so perhaps all is not well there. Nothing like getting things tossed about when you've been over the obvious potential culprits to possibly expose the not so obvious and often overlooked/not considered ones. It does bear scrutiny.

I was working on Tinkerbell ( 850 MKIII) --adjusting a new isolastic--and thinking about a JPS 850 for sale up in Seattle. Suddenly I felt the temperature in the room drop and a thought came into my head " she will find a way to kill me..."

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to conclude that they are all female in nature by the contrary and possessive behavior exhibited one and all..... Acquire a rusted old pig falling apart and cover her in silk and pearls for a good ride every time..... The Commando you fools.
Out to put the charger on the battery and make up a jumper for when my courage returns just to be sure of the switch.

pull the battery out to charge it. In the mean time, attach continuity tester probes to each of the terminal leads, then go through all the circuits to check them. You can jiggle the key in it's cylinder to see if it looses continuity. You should also be able to have zero continuity with everything shut off or else you have a short of some kind.

If everything tests good and your battery has been going flat, I'd guess that your battery is toast OR your Rotor/stator is not charging it for some reason...

... and my commando is definitely a male. It's loud, gawdy, and usually covered in some dirty mixture of oil and road grime.

Please remember in this PC day and age your opinions are valuable but ultimately worthless. Your Norton will be whatever it identifies itself as! Sorry, but that's how it is.....

Mine is a self admitted 46 year old doxy and far too old for any PC influence. A rock is still a rock in my work zone.

Did the jumper.... same thing, so switch removed from equation.... Cool weather and getting after carbs is what I'm smelling, and changing the gas out. It smells peculiar. More like a thinner of sorts and wouldn't be the first time for it either.

Since putting her back on the road almost 2 years ago have had to dump/drain fuel five times because she refused to run on the gas I bought from variety of vendors.

An internal break in the negative wire at the fuse holder.... The short one right off the battery.... corrosion right in the center of the 4" monster causing intermittent continuity. No juice was going to the rectifier was my first clue to back up the search. The entire harness is going to need replacement soon.
Going to replace the switch also rather than risk it biting me on a back road also.

You must have spent too much time in Cambridge, Massachusetts?

I think of my current Norton build as Excalibur...before I finish it purchasing the mythical sword will have been less expensive...

Back to the original question...Sounds like all the electrical components on your motorcycle are original?, Engine likes a nip or two of oil? Transmission still got some spring in it's step? Are the tires young enough to have the 4 digit DOM ?

Replace the electrical system! Live within the limits of what is left of the mechanicals and both of you will get to your Maker's carless motorcycle park together...

Seems like everyone is posting about being old; a full season of Soap Opera episodes; time isn't on anyone's side anymore. If I ever get to the point where I can't kickstart a motorcycle (except for BSA singles) I'm buying an ultralight, least I can hand prop it...

Best!

Nasty blue stuff right in the middle of an insulated wire... no nicks, insulation clean & flexible.... Just age manifesting itself, and I'll wager a donut fart to a dollar there's more in there waiting like baby cobras to strike along with the other near half century surprises in hiding.
I can't imagine myself pushing a button to start my Norton. It is much too easy to kick over when everything is in order and is generally off on the first one.
