Okay to make it short I set the 850 in her shed until it cools off, but..... She had taken to becoming unreliable on starting/running anyway. Cleaned carbs, new jets/needles, went over floats/needles, new plugs/wires & plenty fire, fuel fresh & plenty of it.
Prime, kick, fire off, dies immediately.... No air leaks and for the first time I'm really scratching the noggin.... I'm okay until the weather cools some because with the old GL 1000 purring again I at least have a daily ride going albeit a wallowing, cumbersome, no turning, heavy highway cruiser.... It can get me through the hot time... I think

Was this a gradual degrading over a few rides , or just wham suddenly fire up after usual start ritual , then just quits , if it sudden I would look at fuel even fresh to you can be bad batch , if gradual check fuel & air filters , otherwise could be long drawn out process of elimination .... the old Honda can’t be all bad , you did choose it at some point .... good luck with your head scratcher ...

At some point probably just go through everything just to take it off the list.

Tell us how you cleaned the carbs...
Flow VERIFIED with liquid through those idle passages?
Run better/longer with the choke on?

There is no kill switch.... just the key.... forgotten story. Anyway Have been through almost everything mentioned which is why I'm perplexed, but as said this is going to wait until cooler times when I can stick with it for more than 30 min. at a time without dropping out.
I've been planning to replace the old carbs.... also having suspicions of my wassell black box due to the abrupt shutdown after motor fires off. So there's a plethora of possibilities, but stop & go tactics aren't going to work out for me because I'll forget what/where/when something was addressed and run in circles.
All was well and out of the blue this gremlin assaulted my trusty beastie...... Yes, I followed the usual drills + many others, also other maintenance due.

Having done all that carb work I'd follow the sparks route. Have the coils been squished a bit? The ignition key may be eroded by headlamp load if you don't have a relay fitted...

If it cuts out instantly, after firing on the electric start, it can be that the ballast resistors are disconnected or broken.

Did you do nothing with the pilot jets?

1) Pilots cleaned & clear. Cannot replace on 932's. 2) Ballast resistors unnecessary with this EI. 3) Coils good & were swapped with another working pair prior to stopping because of heat..... No deviation. I'll get back to it and sort it soon when the temps aren't so bad. If I were superstitious I'd believe she was jealous for all the work and attention given to getting the wing going, but I'm not.

Now don't go telling me that the thoughts haven't skittered across your mind as yours suddenly screwed you as you were being faithless.... They are not just a machine.... They have a soul, which is why we're caught in the web of intrigue about them. Ancient Alien Technology... very ancient indeed.

Internal contacts in the Lucas keyswitches ALWAYS go dodgy. Bypass with "hot-wire, and prove it.

When it cools a bit GP. I've push things far too much this summer.... Been dizzy several times and recuperation periods much longer than 20 years ago. You're correct because switch has required attention in the past but only affected lighting side at those times.
