I ordered some non polarized LED bulbs from http://www.superbrightleds.com/ for my positive ground bike and they do work, but the improvement in lighting is not as great as I'd hoped (but is noticeable)...I had higher power bulbs than stock to begin with so the mod might more worthwhile for others. Anyway, here is a photo of the bulbs, a before shot, and an after shot...hmm, looks like VERY ltttle improvement in the photos, but the guages do seem a bit brighter in person...they do save a few watts and should last forever

Im a big fan of LEDs.....but the real benefit of this conversion is not necessarily brighter illumination....Its the precious wattage you will be saving. LED burn the juice in "milliamps", its almost negligible to the Norton electrics, this is power that can be used somewhere else on the bike.
For me its important because I ride home in the dark every night, and anything to help Sir Lucas stay happy I do it.

As for the savings in wattage, perhaps add another bulb on
the other side? The one sided illumination has always left
me shaking my head.

agree, will need to add another bulb to fix it properly....FWIW I picked up a 2006 Triumph Tiger recently and it has the same problem w/ the speedo 35 years later, poor illumination and only illuminated on only one side, fortunately a green LED fixed it since the numbers are translucent and backlit, thought it would need a bulb added too

I think someone not long ago installed a ring of leds in the instrument. That was cool.

Great fix drones!
Thanks for the info. Along with my Norton, I am going give the "drones light strip fix" a go on my old Triumph chronometric too.
