Lansdowne forks rattle...

In another post, I said I had a metallic noise in my stock forks when the forks extend.
I took the forks apart and found significant free play (up/down) in one fork's lower steel bushing.
According tot he manual, when the forks extend, there is hydraulic pressure that forces the steel bushing down

I have two sets of Lansdownes and I cannot remember if they make noise or not. Hey, it is winter , not like I can
take a quick blast to see.

Mr. Clint. If you prefer speed of response over quality of response, you should try one of the several Facebook groups. There, you will receive multiple responses within minutes. Of those responses, 50% will be just...wrong, 30% will have nothing to do with your question, 18% will question your politics, and if you're really, really, lucky someone, who is also on this forum, will answer your question. Good luck.

Could be a lot of things causing the clunk, best to pull it all apart and see what is happening in there, being a DH is not going to help, bad attitude don't get you anywhere, could be something worn, lack of oil, adjustment, till you pull them down and look inside, but I be looking at external things first or look at the nut behind the steering head.
If you don't have a clue in what you are doing, then maybe an old Norton isn't for you.

Thanks to those who made valid replies.... There's always the prats who don't say anything then when you post something they don't like they're onto the post like flies on sh*t, and about as informative... 😂 😂
I deleted my last two comments, but will just say you will not find a better forum comprised of enthusiasts very willing to help those of us who need it in keeping our Commandos on the road, even, apparently, if you insult them! What a great group!

Yes several issues can cause it. Look at the link I sent earlier.

Plus be aware the space out and setting of the cap components is critical if you are to maintain the required range of adjustment for controlling damping. Get the space out wrong and you may either jam the long needle into the valve or else have it so high it has no effect over the entire range of adjustment

The adjusters for safety should be backed off entirely or even removed when the inner threaded tubes are installed to the fork caps.

The knock off guy sends them assembled with springs so that is not an issue.
The original John Bould (R.I.P) units came with no springs so that part was up to the installer.

The needle rods when installed afterward will simply seat as normal.

I have a hunch the OP is the UK granite slab person with another profile that was kicked off here long ago (and every FB page dedicated to the Commando)

Condolences to the decent Brits here. 😁

While I have Landsdowne dampers that I am quite happy with, and have made snappy comments myself in the past
on various topics, I can no longer follow this angry fellow's thread. He, apparently, cannot afford a couple of pints to
calm himself. Or..... has had a few too many.

Pints.... that's exactly what I was thinking.. to help this thread simmer down. 🍻😎
I'll start.... 😜

I joined this forum last year when I got my Commando.
Had a BMW K1200s before. What a difference!

This forum is great. Everyone wants to help and give back.
Up until today, it was all positive ! Good humour too

With thanks to you all
