L 20. What does it mean?

I'm just curious if anybody might know why the left hand crankcase on my MK3 has L 20 stamped on it on the front edge, above the front isolastic mount and below the barrels?

There is no stamp on the right crankcase.
 
Dunno. Mine has H22 as do others that I've seen. It's not to do with matching the halves because those numbers are stamped low down on the rear.

Presumably a batch number or production date code ? My bike is from April 1975. Any clues there ?
 
My Mk III L/H case is also stamped H22, although the cases are factory replacements.
