I thought all the abbreviations came about with flip phones that had three letters on each key, press once for the first letter, twice for the second letter and three times to choose the third
In the early 80s I was involved with RBBS (Remote Bulletin Board Systems). At the time, the transmission speed was 11 characters/second and a CP/M computer didn't have more than 64k bytes of memory so shortening words was helpful. For instance, BYE was how you signed off rather than Goodbye. BYE was arguably the most important command since it stopped your connection and set the computer up to accept another. LOL is a RBBS term - so way before flip phones.

OK! Someone please start a dictionary on the meaning of all these acronyms! Their screwing with my head!
Both British and English!

For most, you can open a browser and type

what does xxx mean

where xxx is what you wonder about.

for instance

what does fwiw mean

It doesn't matter if you enter in upper, lower, or mixed case.

You can also go to the urban dictionary and ask but this is quicker: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=FFS Where what you want is at the end.

Finally, if it's been used for a while most dictionaries will have them.

If there is a separate American and British English meaning they will tell you.

Also, there is a translation most words (not acronyms) in the technical thread of this forum.
