I haven't been riding that much recently with working at home, helping the wife a lot with her new business and the twins birthday right before Xmas.

So, I made a 9am appointment for getting a warrant of fitness tomorrow, since the Muttster's has expired.

Drained out all the wet sumped oil, and it fired up first kick. Sweet. But, running up and down the long drive the rear brake was wooden.

Loosened the rear axle, stood on the brake, tightened and went for another run. Still wooden. Braked hard to test. Too hard. No more rear nipple on the brake cable.

No 9am warrant tomorrow means no sunny day ride. Just try and find someone to repair the cable the day before NYE...
 
David. There's bound to be someone in the Norton club in Auckland that can help you. There is also a guy who sells Norton bits on trademe that might have one. I have spare cables fastened to my bike that go everywhere I go,.

It is shorter than stock. Just need to find someone to solder a nipple on. The local guy in Kumeu is closed up for a couple more weeks.

Make yourself a solder pot from a 1/2 inch NPT pipe cap. Melt in enough solid wire solder to cover the nipple, then dip nipple in acid flux, and plunge the cable + nipple into it.

Piece of cake.

You will need to splay out the end of the cable before soldering . You cant just rely on the solder. If you cant do it, get in touch with your Norton area rep. He's an expert at anything Norton.
 
Not sure why you have a shorter cable on your commando. I thought they were all the same. Ah, you have rear pegs. Get a spare made and loop it beside your battery in a sealed bag.

just make sure to turn up with a hot drum.... then the brake will surely pass muster with out the tester having to use brute strength and risk pulling off anewly soldered nipple. incidently i have only ever had one rear brake cable from 1972 to date.. Surely ,as its so short , it should be possible to lubricate by cable oiler...If you have rear sets , then issue will be loss of leverage. Do check thecable routing though.

If I had a nipple, I would solder it. I don't.

I thought I had a spare stock cable, but I must have chucked it out. Should have kept it. I am going to have to make a spare.

I think part of the issue is I just made new mounting plates for the rear sets, and the cables were too long.
 
Can someone post measurements for me of L W H of the stock brake cable's yoke and the diameter of the clevis pin please?
 
The clevis pin is 1/4" ?

What is the yoke ? (What the pin resides in ?)

I probably have a good used cable I could post tomorrow but it wouldn't arrive until next week.

Yes, the metal bit the clevis pin goes thru.

I can pick one up in town, just need to know if it will work with the rear sets before I do that and go to the shop to have new nipples on.

All this talk of nipples...

As you have time on your hands, have you considered going to a brake rod set up? You ain’t gonna pull the nipple off of that!

I use a reversed / upside down brake lever on the drum end. It came with a revered spring for it too, but having strong springs inside, and a spring on the lever, I deemed this unnecessary.

I got the kit from Norvil, but modified it a bit, ie replacing the forked clevis end with a rose joint, etc.

I don’t know if the angles would allow it, but as you use a high level pipe you might not need the reversed / upside down lever ?
