Is there any reason why I shouldn't use Redline MTL in the tranny of a early 850 Commando. I use it in a Triumph car with a 4 spd and there is a noticeable difference in the smoothness of shifting.

I use Redline MTL in the primary chaincase. I use Redline "Shockproof Heavy" in the gearbox. (And to complete the trilogy, Redline 20W-50 Motorcycle oil in the engine).

I talked to an engineer from Spectro oil a few years ago. He stated that the important oil ingredient for our old Brit bikes is zinc. He also said that petroleum based oils start to break down with extreme temperature. I told him I was running over 240°F in the tank. He said he wouldn't like to see it much over 220° but greater than 190°in the tank. This prompted me to install an oil cooler and thermostat. I now rarely see over 190°.

Had the opportunity to speak with the owner of Web cams a few months ago. I had called about premature lobe wear of a Web cam in my Combat. She asked what oil I used. When I told her Redline and later switched to Mobil 1, she gave me hell for running the Mobil 1. I now use Torco MPZ. That's the one with the heavy zinc content. BTW, she also rebuilt my cam for $100.

Here's some interesting info on oils specific to Norton use: http://nortonclub.com/docs/OilTemp.pdf

More reasons to use Redline - that article, and this snippet from Red Line's website:

As part of Red Line’s all-new Powersports line, these High Peformance Motorcycle Oils are fully-synthetic formulas specifically created for the high demands of the latest high-revving four-strokes motocross bikes and ATVs, Sportbikes, and V-Twins. Available in popular viscosities of 10W40, 20W50, and 20W60, these ester-based products contain the anti-wear chemistry demanded by mechanics and enthusiasts.

The levels of zinc and phosphorus blended into these lubricants are among the highest in the industry and combine well with Red Line’s chemistry, designed to seal piston rings for more power, fight fuel dilution, extend drain interval and provide stronger film strength over a range of temperature. This oil also features lower levels of friction modifiers for superior wet clutch operation. Excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, cleanliness, and ability to lubricate hot metal make Red Line High Performance Motor Oil a superior lubricant. Recommended for JASO MB, API SJ, SG, & SH.
