Interstate tank

Yeah, he should have known to not keep kicking a Commando when it won't start. Saw him standing in line at the BMW test rides at Barber this year.

I just bought an interstate tank from Royal Choppers in India after looking for a factory tank for years.I knew it was going to be a crapshoot going in.
When it came in I took it out of the box and was very pleased.Very nice paint job with the logo and striping well done. Then I go to install it with the proper mounts and rubber pads and it was not even close.I got in touch with the owner of the factory and first he told me to have it professionally installed. Then he said it would fit on an interstate bike.I told him that all the fuel tanks were interchangeable but he kept on the Interstate bullshit.Long story short.
I took the tank to a good welder and had the recess at the neck cut back 1/4". Then I made adapters to move the front studs forward 1/2".They will be able to save the paint where it was welded.I am going fer test run tomorrow with my fingers crossed!
I looked at Barbers this last year again and one guy had a tank and 2 sidecovers for$1800.Sold them the first morning.Baxter has one for $850 with a dent in it.I think that the guys in India could do well if only they get their patterns correct on the base.
My two cents

Too bad on getting side-swiped on the tank. Did the weld job work to your satisfaction?

Obviously Royal Choppers Don’t know Spit, or at least Nortons.

Concerning because Royal Choppers have been reported in several places as one of the good ones.

I don’t know who made my Indian tank but the mounts were fine. Petrol tap location and cap fitting not so much. But I had the issues fixed for NZ $200. It was an unpainted Interstate tank.

The welder did a beautiful job and he will be able to repaint the area and then clear coat
I will have about $650.00 into it when done.It is a shame that all this has to be done. They list different side covers for the Interstate tanks and I don’t know where to start on that.
Are the covers interchangeable for the different years other than the Mark III?

if you have a good Interstate tank with paint for US $650 you have done very well.

I bought my unpainted steel Interstate side covers from RGM. Mk 11 1974. They fit just fine but price plus paint is going to cost what your tank cost or more.

Although I picked up a steel factory tank to replace my glass one, I’m sticking with my glass side covers. I’m guessing they won’t care about our crappy E-10 fuel. My friend’s 74 850 came from the dealer with a swapped roadster steel tank but they didn’t swap out the side covers. They painted them black as the new roadster tank was green. But... I note that his steel cover does not have the riveted in storage box that my glass one does.

I got a pair of Indian Interstate sidecovers from the vendor in this thread. Excellent value for $$.

I have a nice Interstate tank I have had since the 90s, but I never had the proper side covers and wanted ones with a tool pocket. So, I figured that for $70 (includes shipping) for the pair I could not go wrong. I got my set yesterday, and they are slightly better than I had expected.

The poorest thing was actually the packaging, which was done as a single lump with the two covers nested together with no bubble wrap between them at all. This caused a bit of marring on the inside of the right cover.

The right cover will need some work, as you can see, but no more so than any used cover would I think.

Left cover is pretty good.

In the UK it generally means that some poor sod has been sold the whole Harley package, Bike a wallet on a chain Harley embossed leather pouch for his lighter or his lipstick and an Expensive Jacket not forgetting "Chaps" to wear on the weekend ;)

And how do you keep your legs warm? I have some leather chaps and they work well for those cool days.

Only the Harley blokes wear those over here
If you ride in the winter you wear leather jeans

When it's cold, I drive the truck and turn the heat on.... although I can tell the bike loves that cool/cold air...

“All Corvettes are Red, the others are mistakes”. Same for Commando roadsters. :)
