Cool build on the power plant..hope everything fits.
Would really like to to see your 40 build when completed. The engine pic I posted is destined for a Kirkham.
It will be a while until I finish the 40, but here is where I am now.

Interchangeable Parts

It’s official!!!

The frame came last night. Since last we spoke I bought front forks and I traded a guy a B44 engine for a bunch of parts I’m picking up tonight including triple trees, oil tank, battery bracket, front engine mount and a side cover. I had the tank.

I need so much more but I am so pumped!!!

Im hoping so as I'm pairing one up with a MK3 engine in a modified MK3 frame. With a mock up done it looks good
The trans main shafts are the same part number right through so that's a positive ( primary drive line up) although as pointed out on the diaphragm thread, maybe part numbers aren't everything.
Ignorance is bliss though. I'll pretend all is well until it isn't!

If the yokes are 1970 model they are the wrong ones for your 850 frame. They are 2 3/8" offset which is for the 27 degree head stock, not your 28 degree frame.

I have the transmission cases (see pics) they are the matching numbers to the engine and frame.

I’m wondering if the inner components would work. I have a lead on a trans.

But if it’s at all sketchy, I’ll pass. It has to be the right fit.

Check both part numbers for both year models at old Britt's website so you can quickly tell if they are correct for your frame.

73-74 '850' yokes are marked ANG* on the underside. The yoke numbers are 064083 and 064084 which are casting numbers and not the actual book part numbers (064078 and 064080).

*(Also 850 Mk3 but the upper yoke is different and the lower yoke has different hole positions)

I’m wondering if the inner components would work. I have a lead on a trans.

As previously mentioned, the internals should be the same.

That would be great. Thanks!

Thank you L.A.B. I am also going down this same path (inadvertently) and your info is greatly appreciated. I bought what I thought was a '73 850 but it turned out to be a '74 850 frame (thanks to Les for pointing this out) with 73 numbers/case.

I've committed to this being a money pit, but it will be an opportunity to build a bike the way I like it. (I have a '64 Dodge pickup with a 440 that is far from original.) Anyways, not trying to hijack the thread, but just wanted to say thanks for the info and looking forward to what Norcoastal accomplishes.

As the GT 40 is all genuwine factory GT 40 , you could use the same approach on the Commando .

The WET Pukekohe C R M C C , N Z . a ride to work black roadster ran Honda 25 front end , and rear end . Custom alloy engine plates .
Ran away from everything . Having been ridden ' every day ' in the rain . If you know some Auckland Winters !

VCery Smooth , Suspension soaked up the bumps .

Hillarious was the upswept ' CANS ' as per the latest dewkati ( then ) on a Dunstall like set up . Very Modern .
Rest was pretty stock .

However , you can get aftermarket High duty Cranks , Cams , rods , heads cams . ETC . Look for N.o.S. cam gear . or V low time . ( gearwheels )
Dusatall Follers were hollow , pushrod to bottom . But BSA Lifters seem to be the current hot set up .
Valves And Springs obviously aftermarket .
Could do a custom timing cover ( flat 0 oil pump ( BIGGER ) and Ignition .
A 45 DCOE Weber or 40 mm Duc. pumper dellorts , or fuel injection .
Custom Intake manifolds improove things . Finned Rocker Covers !

Just a New Quaife 5 speed & a belt drive set up ,

And youve sav ed thousands . And its all NEW !

There Ya Go .

The whole MKI, MKII, MKII is very confusing.
To identify a commando you need to know 3 things:
rolling chassis version
drive train version
body style

combinations of these 3 make up over 30 different commandos.
I suggest you source and buy the correct parts to satisfy each of these 3 groups .
Many parts are version specific. Otherwise you can buy lots of parts that will consume money and be dead stock on your shelf.
