I am in need of a couple parts on the backfire mechanism for the Mk 3.
Thrust washer 06 5752
And flange nut 06 4745
They don't seem to be readily available and if so at premium prices.
Has anyone found a working alternative for these parts.
I am hoping companies specializing in fasteners , bearings etc may offer suitable replacement.
Thanks all
John

Both are listed as in stock at Andover Norton. Not cheap, but they are specialized, tricky to machine, parts.

Sorry it us 5652 washer

They look like very specific parts to me… so very little (ie zero) chance of bearing suppliers etc having them.

My advice is to get your order in with Andover… and be thankful you can still get such parts off the shelf for a 50 year old obsolete machine !

My friend with the mk3 just ordered and recieved from AN both a splined thrust washer and a new nut for the backfire device. We will be making the tool (thrust washer welded to a socket) as per Oldbrits article for setting breakaway torque.

I used the old thrust washer , ground off the outside into a hex and then torque wrench ! Simple. Roy. Part 17, 06.5652 . Hold nut 06.4745 in vice .

After some research I will order via one of our US dealers who appear to have all items in stock.

If you read through Old Britts article on the backfire assembly thete is an option to do a manual adjustment by hitting starter and tightening the nut methodically until the gears engage.
Thanks all for the feedback

I don't like the peening lip, makes trying to set the release torque a nightmare. So i screwcut a thin locknut (you can get two out of a standard 1/2" UNF nut)
Machine off the peening lip from the flange nut, thin down an open ended spanner and then using a 3/4" spanner on the locknut it is childs play to set the correct torque. When finally set, undo the locknut and apply a spot of loctite and tighten back up again.
The photos explain all

Yes, we did attempt this trial and error method...but we did not have an open ended spanner, thing enough, to adjust the flanged nut between attempts...that that meant needing to remove the stator carrier to fit our socket wrench on to change the setting each time....a really tedious affair so we eventually gave up and ordered the spare thrust washer to make the tool to use a torque wrench.
