Hi, on my 850 mk3 I have a delay of a few seconds between turning on the indicators and them starting to blink (the amber tell-tale has the same delay, only blinks when the indicators start to work). Not battery related, charge is good. It is the same length of delay at all times: start / end of a ride; stationary and at speed; and with / without headlights on. Is this usual, or a fault?

Could be dirty connections including the earth.
A muti meter put into the feed connector might or might not show up a current delay.
Also check switch gear contacts are clean.

Yes the electro-mechanical flasher unti has to heat up a bi-metallic strip sufficiently until it bends to dis-connect the power....then cools until it re-connects and starts heating once again. It may just need a clean up of the internal contacts (the metal cover pops off) or maybe beyond saving. Newer electronic flashers work just fine, not polarity dependent (two-prong type is all you need).

I'll stick with it, but check it's ok. Where is this unit with the contacts?

This what it should look like:
