I can't find anything in the manual. I might be lazy, by trying to check without removing the calliper? How do I tell if my rear pads are in need of replacement? I've noticed both pads' locating tabs are 1/3 inboard from their notch in the calliper body. Do these tabs give an indication of wear? đź‘Ť

The tabs do give an indication of wear.
Whether that was intentional or not I couldn't say but there's no cause for concern until the tabs reach the open ends of the slots, and at about 1/3 along the slot should still have plenty of friction material on them.

I pulled up into a friend's place a few years back , hit the front brake and both pucks dropped out . I drive a lot !

I have the AP callipers on the front (MC done and upgraded front disc with bobbins... works very well). So only have the back brake with these pads. Will watch for that!

It would actually be pretty easy to glue some bits of thin white (for example) plastic onto the inside of the tangs that protrude out from the caliper so that you can see how close the pads are to needing replacement.

Like so...
