Imperial size spanners

Regarding the inner gearbox cover, as these don't have a high torque requirement I use (purists look away now!) a metric 1/4" drive socket from an 'el cheapo' screwdriver/socket set bought for household chores...

Last vestiges of credibility now gone :-(
Haha. Those Koken sockets fit perfectly and are very satisfying to use.

I must get out more. :)

I use 3/8 drive Koken WW sockets mostly also 3/8 and 1/4 drive AF sets where applicable, though I also have 1/2 drive WW and AF sets I prefer using the smaller sets as its harder to over force [strip] I also have a set of Sidchrome WW ring / open enders and a Stahlwille Starter spanner in 1/4-5/16 WW it's like a "C" spanner.

"and a Stahlwille Starter spanner in 1/4-5/16 WW it's like a "C" spanner"

Very classy. You will have mortgaged your house for that one.

And a set of WW Sidchrome rings / open enders.

Very envious.

Hi Gents,
I didn't realize the exchange is still going on .... I will have to catch up!
I made this table of replacement spanners. Nothing is new about it of course. A printout might be handy at the shadow board or in a sealed plastic envelope at the workbench.

Cheers,
Knut

When I bought my first Commando in the mid 80s, I already had a basic set of SAE AF and metric wrenches and 3/8 sockets. I bought these from Poke's Cycle in Seattle and they have served me well.

I need to track down where my missing 5/16 WW is.

edit: it was right under my tool roll. Sigh.

Ten years ago I helped my in-laws move out of their big old Victorian villa into a smaller modern place. My FIL (RIP) was a machine operator/maintenance engineer most of his working life at Holeproof, and I got a whack of BS/WW and BA spanners and 1/2" sockets, as well as a lot of old AF stuff (and Makita and Dewalt tools) too.

One of those big double ring spanners is perfect for the axels f/r.

Those sockets on the bottom row are all WW.

I have Metrinch and they are very good to cover all sizes of nut/bolt heads.
Only one drawback - depending on the spanner/nut combo there is usually a fair bit of "play" before the nut actually turns. Usually no problem but not good in tight spaces.

My favorite wrenches are a set of two Channellock Uni-Fit (#38052) ratchets which used the same "wall drive" profile as Metrinch - briefly - until, I imagine, Metrinch found out. In just two wrenches the Metrinch profile works so well on anything and everything between 5/16" and 3/4" I'm actually surprised that we are still able to buy system specific wrenches.

No matter what bike you own having the right tools that fit for each bike is a investment to your workshop and WW socket, ring and open spanners is an investment for our Norton's forcing a A/F socket on a WW bolt head by tapping it on, is not good and having to get it off the bolt head.
I still use the first tool kit I brought new when I brought my first Honda dirt bike when I was 15 years old back in 1974 full metric socket, ring and open ender spanner set, they been well used in the 52 years and used on my Land Rover and Modern Triumph as well I still have a Honda dirt bike.

I've used Metrinch for 20 yrs now on British, American, Japanese and Italian machines without an issue. Once scoffed at late night infomercials now seem to be having a moment as my set has tripled in price since I bought it.
