what size spanner for sump

what size spanner do i need for the sump plug on my 1970 fastback ? is it 1"1/2 AF

that would be a 1 1/2" standard (US) 1 1/2" AF (UK) and slightly over 38mm (metric) I'd use a socket rather than a spanner though

If it's truly a 70 FB, the frame brace down there won't let him put a socket on it. You can get a 1 1/2" box end from Wallymart or Harbor Freight for around $10.

your right there dav no chance of a socket or even a ring spanner so it is a 1 1/2 " ? size ?

Dunno what you Folks call it in Oz. It's actual designation is (S.A.E.) Normally just Refered to as 'Standard' in North America, or 'AF' in the UK.

Look for a trailer hitch wrench. I found mine at Auto Zone but most auto supply houses will have them. I found they are considerably less expensive than the other spanners.

If it's anything like the expletive deleted sump plug on my Triumph. Neither Whitworth nor standard would quite fit the expletive deleted thing.
If I remember right. 39mm was the only size that fit the expletive deleted thing.

Moral of this expletive deleted story. Heat up the case first, then use whatever it takes to get the job done. :wink:

I don't have any trouble getting the ring spanner (box end wrench) on mine. It's just a bit limited in the arc you can make with it. Yes, at walmart it's in the hitch section, and yes they're lots cheaper than the ones at the auto stores ($50-75). I don't see the difference in the one I got from the expensive ones, it's just not made by snap-on, I wouldn't want to get whacked with it.

I use a large adjustable wrench. Doesn't seem to be a problem but than I have a '74

Here's the trouble with the 68-70. I've tried an adjustable spanner, but it just doesn't hack it. The ring/box works even if it's only a small turn, especially if it's offset a bit.

hey dave this photos almost answers my next question , "how does the side stand attach to the frame " any chance you can post a photo from the outboard side ? im hoping to order both stands from norvil in the next few days

This is the 'correct' size - 7/8 Whitworth

I think this spanner did good service on Centurion Tanks before I inherited it

It seems that the British have been more than considerate here,
Almost any thing will fit.
What ever happened to good ol... Bahl, Sidchrome, E.T.C., and Crescent.?
Everything seems to be Snap on these days.
Macca, there's swap meets coming up at Balhanna, and Hahndorf, lots of tools.
Or Myponga, and the Port Dock markets also have them.
