Ikon shock choice

If it happens while you are racing, you are probably on the ground. I love the look of those shocks, but I would not use them.

Maxton or Falcon are used by many, in fact most of, the serious racers in classic / historic racing over here. Even more modern riders use Maxton than classic boys. Even more off road racers use Falcon than road racers. I have NEVER heard of the failure mode you suggest actually happening.

I think most aluminium brake master cylinders are hard anodised, and hard anodising has also been used as the wear surface in water-cooled cylinder barrels on some two strokes. In a shock absorber, you would probably only get a failure if the anodising was faulty. It is normal anodising without the die, but done in a chilled bath of dilute sulphuric acid. I don't trust it - for cylinder barrels Nikasil is much better.

Re; hard anodising on cylinder barrels.
Cheap Chinese copies maybe but I doubt it.

I think the best that can be said of the basic IKONs is that you never think about them. Comfortable and a very well controlled rear end. The Corbin makes absolute sense of the Commando riding position. Perfect for hours on end with no other changes.

The Konis I have had on my racers have always been like that. But racing is not as hard on race bikes as road bike, in some ways.

After looking around at the options, the high end offerings by Ikon etc are really up there in the price range. Seems to me that the likes of Falcon and Maxton who will supply you with custom specified shocks are a bit of a bargain when looked at like that.

For my current required I’ve opted for Maxton again. Super light, top quality, custom spec, ‘classic look’, screw adjustable pre load, adjustable damping, cheaper than the top end Ikons. Sorted.

Linkie shavinkie?

Screw adjustable preload refers to the spring or the damping?

It the spring preload ie ride height, instead of the standard ring with 3 or 5 set heights you have a threaded body with 2 rings so infinite height adjustment between a low and high limit.

Ikon shock choice

Not very clear but above the decal is the thread on the OD of the alloy body and above the spring are the 2 rings threaded on the ID so you can loosen off the rings, turn to adjust the ride height and then tighten the 2 rings to lock the desired position.

When you filled in the spec sheet, did you weight the bike or did you simply ask for "Commando, small tank and I weigh x stone"?

Weighed the bike. Front and rear. And me. Bit of a shock realising how much I weigh in my riding gear...!

If you want some, act now. Richard at Maxton was telling me he predicts supply issues in a few weeks time if this lockdown continues...

At this point I don't want to weigh myself either with or without riding gear. This stay at home thing is not nice.

Well I’ve got two daughters who seem to think the thing to do is BAKE!

Trouble is they’re actually rather good, and, well, you know, I wouldn’t want food to go to waste...

Might have to send my Maxton’s back for stiffer springs if this keeps up...!

Anti-squat depends on the angle of the swing arm and the spring rate and the centre of gravity. In practice many people might change all three randomly.

NJB ones seem to have a different top lug arrangement to A-N, with a longer neck.
The A-N ones look remarkably like EMGO. The price would indicate this too.
That said, not necessarily a bad thing. I swapped out my IKON 7610s for another build and fitted the EMGO and to be honest, based on price I wasn't expecting much. I was actually surprised.
For a budget product I'd say they're very good; similar to original Girling gas shocks.
How long they stay that way I don't know - I've also got some on my T160 which I was hoping to get some miles on this year...
