It's rear shock time. I went to the Ikon website and they list numerous units for Commandos. Any recommendations?

I've just fitted a pair of 7610 1653 SP9 shocks, chrome spring and black body, easy changeover.
Haven't ridden yet as the front end is part way through a Lansdowne fitting. :D

Hi Iain, what did the Ikons cost and where did you get them from.I am going to have to do just what you are doing as my rides this year have stuffed the rear Hagon shocks.

I bought mine direct from Ikon. You can get them from Cycletreads special order, but I got a good price direct, except for the Gov't ticket clip!

My recommendation is to tell them what sort of load you expect to carry, your weight with gear, how much if any luggage, how often you ride 2-up, etc.
They can give you the correct springs to suit your style.

Ikons are a great shock, really they are Koni shocks of old and they are great on a Commando, contact them and they will give you the right ones, Ikon are great to deal with direct contact, I run them on my Thruxton and broulgh a new set for my Manxman project, I have been running Koni shockes on my Norton for 37 years and have only rebuilt them for the first time 3 years ago getting the rebuild kit from Ikon for under $50, the new shockes are the same as my old Koni's, they are easy to rebuild yourself and they will last a life time of hard riding.

I am running 76-1373 IKONS on my Interstate for over 25K miles now. I just received some eyelet bushes for replacing the haggard looking ones. They can be rebuilt. I have been happy with them.
Cheers,
Thomas

I've had my Ikons on the bike for years and tens of thousands of miles. Absolutely no issues. Handles nicely and good control and comfort over the bumps. A really nice match for the Lansdowne conversion. I think they are the basic model. I'll have to check. Money well spent.

Thanks all. I will give Ikon USA a call on Monday and order up a pair. I'm planning to do the Lansdsdowne conversion this coming winter.

Hi Dereck,

i did my homework on the Ikon website, then emailed Ikon about spring rates (std is the highest spring rate and allegedly good for me) and then took a printout to the local bike shop and they ordered. Had them here later the same week.
The shop did say that the NZ supplier doesn't bring them in one pair at a time so there could be a wait if you were first in the queue.
Will need to find the invoice, will pm you later. They are pricier than Hagons.

I run 76 series shocks too, but they do have one major issue. The rebound bump washer dissolves in the oil and the resultant sludge blocks the oil transfer holes and locks the shock, next time you go over a bump the rod bends. I bought a basket job that had a set of NOS 76 series shocks, I took them apart and despite them never been used the washers had dissolved and the sludge had settled to the bottom. I cleaned out the shocks and fitted new nylon oil resistant rebound bump washers so good to go but it shows its not if but when the oil transfer holes clog up.

never realised this are the seal kits easily available? And where did you get the oil resisting washer's from? Cheers baz

FWIW, I just had my 30+ year old Koni 7610-1298 shocks off my R90S fully rebuilt at Ikon USA in Pennsylvania. $230 total bill, about 3 weeks door to door turn around time, excellent communications with the service tech, including a full write up on what was done and all parts replaced. Very professional service and the shocks are looking as good as all those miles they have traveled will allow. A nice clean patina I think that's called. I have no doubt there will be a new set of Ikons on my Norton when it gets to be a roller again.

Thanks to all for your input. This week I will be loading the Norton and a few other bikes into my truck and covered rental trailer for my upcoming move to Arizona. Once I get settled I will be ordering a set of Ikons for my 850. My guess is that they will outlast me.

I've had some Konis on the guzzi for a while now. The first rebuild I did myself, with parts I collected from the Crowland Koni UK-HQ, as it was then.
I think I also replaced the eye bushes again on a separate occasion - they seem to be a wear item.

The second rebuild was done by Maxton, before they started re-springing\re-valving them and selling them. Presumably the collapse of Koni put an end to that. Ron fitted his single rate springs and made up a spacer to get the ride height\sag correct.
Later Maxton made their own twin shocks.

I've had Koni's on several bikes, they are easy enough to rebuild.
I had the local Ohlins expert set up my race BMW with a set of non piggyback shocks ( he did the front end to) and the handling is superb.

for my R90s I recently got a set of shocks from The Shock Factory. Good price.
Spring rate selected for me and gear, adjustable compression/rebound

Not often you get to speak to the owner and sometimes CNC operator.

Did a South Island trip to the Burt Munro week and very impressed on our 'B' roads.

My Roadster has Konis and the Interstate I am working on has Hagons, will be interesting to see what they are like :D

For those of you who have rebuilt Koni shocks. I have a pair from My old Norton Commander (rotary) that need rebuilding. I have the new seals supplied by Norman Hyde here in the UK. What is involved in getting them apart and what oil would be best to re-fill with? Thanks
