I decided to go ahead and have my frame powdercoated. I took it all apart last weekend. It's almost ready to go, just needs some cleaning and some work on the cradle.

So today's question: how do I remove the ID plate rivets without damaging the plate? I'd like to preserve it if possible. I assume these rivets are the hardened, twisted-shank variety as shown in the link below?

Hi Debby,

You are correct about the hardened twist-lock rivets.

The best way that I have found to remove them is to grind a flat on each side of the head with a cutting wheel on a Dremel, clamp on a pair of Vise-Grips, and screw them out.

Best to mask off the surrounding areas with several layers of duct tape or something, in case the Dremel slips.

New nameplates are available for the various years (750, 850, & MK3). IMHO, look really nice on a freshly powdercoated frame. All you need is a set of number/letter stamps to put on your number. To get the numbers in the correct location and straight, I always use a straight edge as a guide for the stamps and leave the plate in the bag that it comes in to protect it while stamping. To get the numerals centred in the boxes, start in the middle and work your way to the outsides.

Hi Debby,

I had Phil Radford make a new plate, including the stamped numbers & letters. He can do this if you send him the original...legal issue. You'll get the original back.

It does look good on a freshly powder coated frame and after 8 years still looks good.

Thanks guys! That's what I needed to know.

I would like to fit a nice new plate but I do want to get the old one off without damage. Having Phil or someone stamp one for me sounds like the way to go. If I do it myself I'd have to buy a set of stamps too and I don't think I'd be getting much use out of them. I'm not planning to be doing this on a regular basis
