Comnoz, did you commission this machining work or was it something that they had (programmed) prior to your intervention/purchase... :D :D :D

What are your intentions with this "prototype" (if it is a prototype)

I had nothing to do with building the engine cases.

As far as the barrels go - I will likely do a small batch of them after the first one is tested and I purchase carbide cutters to replace some of the high speed steel that was used on the first one. Jim

If you do a bit more work on the programme you might be able to incorporate a dyno into your mill and just push a start button to test the motor. Then I'd be much more impressed.

Actually I have used the mill to dyno test starter motors. There is a good electric brake on the main quill motor. Jim

Jim,
I thought this was a family site. Please stop showing these pornographic images. Any more of this & I'll have to send out for another box of Kleenex!!

Hi Jim,

I have been hiding in the shaddow's now for some time following your work and trying to learn what I can from you and the many other legends and smart cookies on here and I amazed at the level of craftsmanship and knowledge and I am in love with the barrells you have just created, as Iove my billet.

I am looking to beg, borrow or sell my ass down at the port to purchase a set of those "KIWI" made billet cases and I was wanting to know what you have done or going to do as in regards to the breather mod's you have made in the past ? I see the breather holes up in the timing side case are alot larger and has the hole below the oil pump been drilled? ( I was to googlie eyed to notice when I saw them in the flesh last)

Are you going to run a 750 crank and shim it or an 850 ?

Thanks heaps for you and everyone else for sharing there info and pics.
Me and my Nickelnorton are loving it !
cheers

One thing I really believe in is development. However it takes a fairly level playing field to encourage it. I am wondering about the race class rules which apply to Jim's race bikes, if that is the intended end use ? What he is building, his dedication to detail is superb and I wonder how many others are playing his game.

Yer I here, what you are saying acotrel.

The way I see it if you are constantly cleaning up and winning in a class you should move up into the next class like pre 82 or open modified as there is always faster competion out there you just have to be fair and find it cause whats the point ridin around at the front like nigel no mates all the time.
I went back to drum brakes recently on a pretty much stock 750 so I could race the classic pre 72 class at the Sound of Thunder here in NZ because the competion was more fair than having to compete against some of the Norton weapons and other super modified flavours running around the circuts these days.
In an ideal dream world it would be nice to have both wouldnt it? Pretty impressive to have a new Norton and give a Triumph 675 a good run for its money hehe.

Horses for courses

Jarrad,
This engine build is for street use only although there may be a salt flats run in it's future.

I will be using a crankshaft of my own build. It is a one piece billet as seen here.
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu31 ... e54ba0.jpg

It is 91mm stoke and will be used with a pair of Swansons titanium rods.

The cases will have all the holes from the timing chest to the crankcase plugged except for one new oil drain hole drilled low near the oil pump. I will plug the large breather hole in the timing chest and install a reed breather at the bottom rear of the cases. Jim

That is a beautiful looking crank, and I'd love to own it just for safety's sake. I wonder about moving toward's a top end motor, however I thnk it is an expensive way to go racing. I find it difficult to justify developing a good bike for a non-existent level playing field. I never have a problem racing against similar technolgy bikes with similar capacity engines. Then it comes down to riding and tuning skills - best man wins.

This is not an engine. This is Art.

This isn't a race bike that Jim's building (not this time at least) its his road bike. Design intention is to use for long distances and high speeds. He has made not claim to building a remotely original Norton!
