How to test your stator output?

Flashback, you didn't mention if your alternator was single or 3 phase. The test I showed was for the single. The 3 phase is the same, just test the alternator output wires in the 3 pair combinations.
 
Original single phase, two wire 130 watt alternator. Trispark, podtronic and Shorai battery. I keep it Pos ground ( just because, I guess ).

Testing the reg/podtronic , it has pos and neg output wires. Can I just connect the resistor between them or should I ground on the frame?

7.5 DcV on the regulator/pod and 9 AcV on the alternater the same as Truimph I guess.
 
Output wire of podtronics and negative lead of multimeter on one resistor lug. Positive multimeter lead and jumper wire grounded to bike frame on other resistor lug. Set multimeter on ten volts DC. I checked Norton manual; should be at least 7.5 volts at 3000 rpm same as Triumph.
I believe the same model alternator is used on both bikes.
 
To follow up. I got my resistor and the alt is only putting out 7 Vac instead of 9. So I am ordering a rotor. The rotor isn't loose but I guess it lost about 25% of its magnetism in 38 yrs. The pod is only showing 6 Vdc which is about 75% of what it should be, so I am sure it is working.

Impossible to diagnose without that resistor. Thanks for the help.

I installed a new rotor and I now get 10 Vac out of the alternator and over 8 Vdc out of the podtronic.
Bottom line .... it is easy to test the charging system to see if it is working or not. If it's not working and you need to diagnose it , any measurements you take without a load on the system are meaningless. You need a resistor.
 
The rotors can be re-magnetized, but it's about as much as a new one, so no bother. Keep your old one.
