How many exhaust gaskets?

My 850 requires 3 exhaust gaskets in order to ensure the exhaust nut doesnt' bottom out before sealing the exhaust. Actually, it's 2 on one side, 3 on the other. The two exhaust nuts look the same externally but the threaded portion on one is maybe 1/8" or slightly more shorter than the other. Do other folks see this as "typical"? The head's exhausts have had inserts installed by a PO so they work fine as far as threading but I don't understand why the multiple gaskets are required or why one nut has a shorter threaded area. Can't see that it really matters but it's one of those things I find annoying...

I was figuring on getting the Colo Norton works exhaust nuts at some point though I have no idea of how much "depth" they have and whether they would eliminate the need for multiple gaskets. Or is that a function of the header pipes themselves... the thickness of the pipe mounting flange would affect this as well.

Just ask Matt. He'll tell you the exact dimensions. Just PM him on the board or start a thread called "CNW Exhaust Nuts".

Mk IIIs came with conical/flat steel exhaust port washers as opposed to the crushable rings of older exhaust systems. If these have been removed, the pipe flange sinks about 1/4" farther into the port and short-threaded pipe nuts may not be sufficient. If you are interested in trying a pair, I have some that I would let go for postage since the 2-into-1 header on my 850 doesn't need them.

I use unbalanced pipes and 750 exhaust nuts on both bikes. The 750 nuts are longer and don't bottom out. Only one gasket needed per side!

Hi Mike,

Like Debbie, I use 750 pipes and nuts on my Mk3. Like yours, I also had new inserts installed. While I need only a single washer per side to seal, Ella at Old Brits insisted on sending me a pair per side, saying that many Mk3 owners needed more than one to avoid bottoming the nut, so I suppose it is a common problem on 850s.

the cnw ones are long enough...put mine on the other week...i've got 3 or 4 threads left on mine sticking out of the head

I'm using 750 head pipes and exhaust nuts on my 850, with NO gaskets. Seems to work fine. Am I screwing something up?

Brian,
Probably not, if all is working fine.

Seems to be, Dave; thanks.

I'd still like to find a little copper crush washer type of gasket for in there, but haven't bothered looking as it seems to work.

I highly recommend a steel crush washer from Suzuki, this tip was published in the Norton Tech Digest some years ago. Suzuki P/N 14181-01D00 avaiable from dealers and online parts sources. Way better than the copper types and thick enough that the 850 exhaust nuts fit without bottoming out. I won't use anything else.

Thanks for that part number Dave, I ordered up a couple. Since the pipes'll be coming off soon for my ring job, I might as well put some exhaust gaskets in when I reinstall 'em. Seems to have worked just fine without them but I'll feel a bit better with some in there. Not sure why....

Thanks all. - BrianK
