I haven't done anything yet, the bikes still in various parts. There was debris everywhere, the oil pump is now locked solid

Swoosh, your filter will not have caught it all. You MUST clean out your tank!

Removing it takes 5 mins. 5 more to clean and another 5 to re fit.

With all the other work you’ve got going on, this 15 minutes is a ‘must do’ !

If you don’t, you risk instantly pumping grimey shit through your fresh built motor.

It’s a no brainer mate...

Yes, tank will get cleaned.

I'm just wondering why the filter doesn't catch more. Isn't that what it's for?

They are technically able to strain down to around 25 microns.

Does your breather go to the tank?

Yes, but through the breather on the back of the engine, through the reed valve and up to the oil tank. That is one heck of a path for anything. Once that engine was punctured there's no pressure in the crankcase and nothing would go up the breather.

But good point.

David,
How many revolutions did your engine do while it was in the process of shitting itself?

You don’t know.!

Expect the worst, metal shavings have gone everywhere.

Clean every part or it may happen again.

I pulled the oil tank, lines and will take the oil filter off but it stuck.

All parts will be cleaned or replaced.

I want to warn you not to show this video to small children or those who are faint of heart. We finally get to see inside the carnage.

I'll be accepting sympathy cards in the lobby.

New oil, fuel and breather lines ordered.

I used a Gates transmission oil line before and doing that again. It's braided and sturdy.

My fuel lines are Tygon, and while they probably last longer than other fuel lines they still got hard after ten years.

For the breather (from the reed valve to the oil tank I went with a clear silicone vacuum line. I'm assuming that because it's a vacuum line it won't loose it's shape? We'll see.

The stuff should be here in the next week or so. I still need to strip the head and see what shape it's in.

Heart Transplant

New oil lines (Gates transmission oil line), new breather hose (silicone vacuum hose), and new fuel lines (Tygon).

Norton 750/850 Commando twins most commonly fail the left cylinder?

I'll let you watch the video and won't spoil the surprise at the end. More pictures to come.

The head is out being rebuilt now. I know how busy Jim is so I decided to stay local. All the guy's in the club use this shop, he's been rebuilding Norton heads since he was doing work for Kenny Dreer. Maybe before then. More on that later too.
