I have to replace the silencers on my bike and am considering replacing the header pipes while I'm at it. I have never had to touch the header clamps in the 20 odd years I have had the bike. What are the odds of the threads stripping in the head if I undo the clamps?

Running the bike with the "clamps" screw in thing's loose is what will destroy the threads. A remove and replace may show the damage but not cause it. Do remember that upon replacement the exhaust system gets tightened from back to front making sure that no stresses are introduced. Don't go cheap get new rubber ISO's at the back brackets. You may have some bedding in issues with a new system.

Who knows? But run the engine and get it nice and hot first, so that the alloy head threads expand away from the exhaust rings which should help them to unscrew.

Also do the same thing when you refit the exhaust rings.

This must be a record! Have you been running the bike during this time?

Make sure that you have the correct workshop tool for undoing the lock-rings also, and place the "hook" on the spanner against the thicker fin on the lockrings only . Don't use the thin fins for leverage, or they will bend.

HOW DID THEY DO THAT?!!! For years I've been trying to figure out how to put a square peg in a round hole and now it looks like someone has finally done it!

They're probably bronze nuts on well used seals. And if they are bronze they shouldn't rip out the threads, (fingers crossed)
