Handlebar vibration (2018)

Would it be better to have the weight out at the ends not just fill the bars or is this what you plan on?
If the weight is at the tips of the bars does that change the way the weights react to the vibrations?

You may be right but initially, at least, I'll try simply filling them (no constructive comments were forthcoming on other's attempts) and maybe progress to "blocking out" the centre section, with foam or similar, if required.
I think the only downside to this approach is potentially wasted extra weight in the centre section.

Okay - pulled a blank with request for other's experience with lead shot - but being a masochist...
Any suggestions for what to use as a "plug" to hold the shot in place. As a last resort I could use the bar-end mirrors but that will suck each time I want/need to remove them (ie: have to push the shot back into the bars).
Needs to be thin so as not to waste space that could have shot in it.
Yours hopefully!

You can get plastic bar end plugs
Maybe use some of those with some silicon to retain them? Put the hand grips over them
Maybe just fill the handlebars with shot if your not worried about the extra weight
Might take some experimenting but if you have the spare time it should make a difference
Let us know
Cheers

Thanks Baz, but my bar end mirrors protrude up the bars by about 60-70mm, so I want something I can insert, around that far, to hold the shot in place.
As stated, the default position is to use the mirror mounts to act as dams - less than ideal though.

Make a slug of lead that will go in the bar only as far as the first bend. Make it short enough to allow room for the bar end mirror.
Lead is heavy and that piece is likely heavy enough.
I for one would love to know if you notice an improvement.

Somebody posted on here before about mixing lead shot with silicone and filling the bar ends with that.

Sounds a bit messy though !

Just use the plastic bar end plugs like Baz says. Trim off the edge that keeps them from going into the handle bar. Push them into the handle bar to where you want them.

Ooooh! I had not understood what @baz meant - yep, Ill try that!

Some time ago I replaced the front iso in my 850. It never ever vibrated before that but probably because there was stuff all left of the iso rubbers. Unfortunately, I had bought heavy duty rubbers, and they cause bad vibes in the bike. In the end, I removed the rubbers and carved the outsides down so that they were a loose fit. No vibes in bars and only slight [ but annoying ] vibes in the foot pegs till about 3000 rpm when it gets really smooth. I use really hard white plastic type side cushions in my iso's and set them at 5 thou. Since using the plastics side cushions, and using 5 though clearance, I have never had to re adjust them. Even when I fitted the new rubbers, I did not have to adjust the clearance. I still use shims in both my bikes and very happy with the resulting low maintenance.

Hi Rob,
Pirtek, the hydraulic hose company used to pneumatically fire a foam pellet through hoses to clean out any dust from the cutting process. These pellets were quite robust and the 3/4 pellet would probably hold the shot in nicely. I think there are quite a few Pirtek branches in Aus - maybe theres one near you?

Lead shot arrived today so:
Used a scraper to de-burr the inside of the ends of the bars.
Pulled the handlebars off and made a couple of "stoppers" from 10mm dia. EPE closed cell expanded foam (had some in the workshop) and wrapped self-amalgamating tape around it until it was a tight fit in the bars. Cut to 6mm length.
Then pushed the first stopper in with the bar-end mirror.
Poured shot in the other end and with the bars in a soft-jawed vise and tapped with a dead-blow hammer until the level was not dropping with hammer induced vibration (about 10 minutes). Then put the second stopper in using same method.
Works out just under 1.3kg of shot in 695mm of bar length.
Have just finished the re-assembly - will report on findings after test ride (tomorrow, I hope!)
Cheers
Rob

Edit: Forgot to mention - first impression is that the handlebars are HEAVY!!

PJFlynn. Listen to the isolastic advice. Commandos with good isolastics don’t vibrate at the handlebars.
Well they must vibrate to some extent...
Mine isn't bad - just experimenting to see what the effect is.
If it's noticeable I'll advise.

My bars are fine too. But the footpegs vibrate below 2500rpm. Can't see how to fill them with lead shot, so I'll just keep it over 2500rpm!

Have you got the standard pegs?
If so - maybe the rubbers have hardened with age?
I bought some new ones recently (part of the half-way rearset project) and was surprised how much more compliant the new ones were (AN) compared with the old ones on the second-hand hangers I bought.
