Guys.Have spent week fitting up.I did initially buy new bars from Andover. However, the ones that are specced are not the same as the originals. The originals flare out more.So I got my originals replated.Having fitted them today,I noticed the clamps dont well, clamp! not as far as Id expect. Not got a pic of when they were fitted.
Should washers be installed under clamps.Nothing shown on Andover.Bike is 750 Roadster.1970.thanks guys.

Hi coomo, nice plating job by the looks of it. You still have plenty of space to tighten the clamps further on the back screws. Do you mean the screws have bottomed out ?

Cheers,

cliffa.

Hi.yes.Ive got a good plating outfit! No, the screws havent bottomed out.The bars are tightend down well. Its just the gap between the clamps, is quiet large.Im thinking maybe some washers were used to take up gap.

Washers, I definitely would say no to that. The gaps don't look excessive to me. Have you torqued the screws down to the correct settings? If so perhaps check that the clamps are of equal thickness each side, so possibly reversing them could close the gap if you are concerned.

Cheers,

cliffa.

Or possibly all the gap was at the front before you stripped it and you would not have noticed it.

HI coomo.
The clamps on my Mk 3 are also large with AN bars so i put the original bars back on and the gap to the clamps were almost the same. (big) Mine didn't have washers from new.

Yup, clamps look similar to my '74 850...visible gaps...you can try to ensure gaps are even between front and back to minimize. As long as they make a good grip on the bars, you're good to go.

The gap looks the same as my '73 850 and my previous '71 750. You definitely do NOT want to use washers or spacers. If you fill the gap with washers/spacers, the clamping force will no longer be concentrated on the bar, where it is designed to be.

I think I see button head SHCS. Which, would bind in the pocket. Get the proper standard SHCS.

Well spotted - the button head screws will lose torque over time as they're not clamping on a machined surface and should be binned off - socket head screws are essential here.

Or do as I'm doing, replace them with nice shinny Stainless clamp from RGM and cheaper tan OE units
