Halo headlight install

hey all
any one have a pic that shows how they set up of the spacers between the headlight and the arms that come off the top triple clamp for the early halo ring headlight holder (and part numbers for the spacers if the andover part) work? i have the aftermarket halo setup ones from RGM and it needs some tweaking, and short of bending the shit out of them (and most likely watching the chrome flake right off while i do it), i'm curious how the stock, or other setup are lined up

I have my original halo, but had to buy a new shell from RGM. The shell was a bit smaller than the original, and the bolt holes in the RGM shell is 5/16 UNF. The original was 5/16 CEI. I ground and polished some SS bolts to look similar.



Since the RGM shell was smaller, it needs longer bolts to reach the shell.

You shouldn't have to bend much, especially the little arms, the halo or shell may bend a bit, but the chrome can take a small amount. The arms are fastened to the tree with 1/4-28 hex bolts, flats. The bolt on the bottom arms are special, if you want a pic of them and the plastic covers I have that too.

thats perfect dave thanks - wasn't sure if there was a different headlight for the halo setup as this bike was a rolling basket that the PO just bolted anything on - my setup seems to have much more space between the arms/halo so some "gently coaxing" may be in order - but at least i can see how another is setup

I am so pleased that you have posted the pictures of the halo headlamp as it is a job that I have to do on my Commando as it is currently fitted with the wrong parts but I have the correct items to replace.
If you would be so kind as to post a photograph of the lower special bolts and give some dimensions that would help immensely.

Actually, the lower mount for the halo is part of the pinch stud, it's the nut that's special and there's a special plastic cover for it. Here's the nut and plastic cover.



The fork pinch stud is a 7/16 UNF or is it WW, anyhow I put a new SS 7/16" UNF on the rear side of the pinch stud, the front part of the stud threads into the tree and a 1/4-28 UNF or WW? sticks through for the halo bottom mounts. Here's the stud assembled but not in the forks.



And here's the special stud. They're available although pricey, 061136. Sometimes the special stud is nearly impossible to get out. Lube it up in the fork lots and lots, and take 2 1/4-28 nuts and lock them on the small end and try to use them to loosen the pinch stud, it comes out from the rear. Alternatively, you may be able to get two 7/16" jam nuts on the rear side.



This only applies to 68-70 Roadster, R, and S models with the central oil tank. I'm sure the other models had the ear mounts for the headlamp shell.

All these parts use 1/4" flat washers, and on the lower, both sides. Note that if you want to be proper the 1/4" washers are 9/16 O.D. and .052" thick, and SAE, AN or USS washers are not the same.

The washer under the 5/16" stud from the halo ears into the shell uses a thin flat washer under the head, it's almost the size of a fender washer.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the purpose of the "halo"?

To mount the headlight. The early ones didn't have the headlight ears.

It's intended purpose was to protect the headlamp assembly, although I think it was mainly a styling gimmick.

Early (pre-S type) the Commandos (Fastbacks) had conventional mounting ears.
